Battery Recommendation?
Quick question - does a Group 65 actually fit the battery tray? Our OEM Group 59 is ready for the recycler, That battery is a little over 10" long, while the Group 65 is a bit over 12". The front edge of the tray is open, but it looks like the airbox is awfully close for a 12" battery to fit...- Slorch

Preemptive Timing Chain replacement?
Considered trading it in? Could a good option if you are in a position to do so. No dealer will put a vehicle with 100K back on their lot. It would go straight to auction, as-is. They would not need to knock $3K off the trade-in value (though a slimy dealer might try). If not, I think that...- Slorch

Car or Truck?
We do too! Funny, but the ads on this page are showing me the 2018 Bentley Bentayga Black Edition, which is also referred to as an SUV, albeit one with a 600HP, twin-turbo W12. It also has a $260K list price!- Slorch

3 (Three) Dealer Oil Changes in 2 days (WOW)
FWIW - the Mopar-branded oil is actually Pennzoil conventional 5W30, a high-quality oil. It does meet the Ford specification for that engine, but with the turbos I can understand wanting the semi or full synthetic. More importantly, it took 3 tries for the service department to fulfill your...- Slorch

Cv axel replacement
Yes - normal and if the amount that came out is significant, you should refill to the proper level. Where the CV axle plugs into the transmission (or transaxle for the rear on the 4WD models) there is a rubber seal. That fits around the axle shaft and holds the fluid in the unit.- Slorch

2014 Explorer Drive train whirr noise
A bad bearing will eventually get loud even at very low speeds, and you'll hear it well before you'd expect tire noise. We had the passenger-side rear go out twice - first at 38K and again at 73K. The latter was masked a bit as we had snow tires on for the winter. Once those came off, it was...- Slorch

Transfer casing fluid??
All have a fill plug, and it is possible to change the fluid on those that do not have a drain plug using a fluid transfer pump. You can get "most" of the fluid out this way, but obviously having a drain plug is preferable. There are a few YouTube videos that show the process on a Taurus SHO...- Slorch

Oil leak
Classic location for a leaking PTU. Is the oil very black with a nasty smell? If so, that will be gear oil from the PTU. Replacement runs $1200-$1500 at a Ford dealer.- Slorch

Dealer Cut a Hole in My Headliner HELP
Right. I meant the Limited model. We were surprised it was not offered even as part of an option package on the XLT models, given midrange sedans from many manufacturers offered it 10 years prior. Either way, I'm curious to see how this all turns out with the headliner replacement. Dealer...- Slorch

Dealer Cut a Hole in My Headliner HELP
I'm astounded a Ford dealer would install a hack like that on a brand-new vehicle, doubly so considering the Platinum models have had the Homelink as standard equipment since 2011. It's not like the techs have never seen the factory install. When we bought our 14 XLT I was amazed it wasn't...- Slorch

Transmission Fluid Flush worth it??
The 6F models have an internal thermostat, and the fluid cannot be exchanged through the cooler lines without keeping the temperature up. 182RG's method above will do it, and I've also seen shops put the vehicle on a low lift, put it in gear and let the wheels spin while performing the...- Slorch

Transmission Fluid Flush worth it??
I was out in the garage this afternoon doing drop-n-fill #2 of 3. Basically, 3 weekends in a row - drop the drain plug, measure what comes out and refill. At 62K, the fluid wasn't too bad. A dark maroon instead of bright red. A drain & fill is not the same as a true exchange, of course, but...- Slorch

Shuddering
Could you drop it at the dealer's lot the night before, and meet the tech at your appointment time the next day for a test drive? Inconvenient, but at least it will definitely be ice cold.- Slorch

Interesting Encounter w/ a previous Explorer Engineer.
Strange encounter. There are no bands in a 6F transmission, and it seems odd for an engineer to be recommending home-blending motor oil.- Slorch

Leaky Rear Diff
$180 is a bit steep to replace the vent valve, unless they were also swapping the fluid, I think. It is literally a $10 part. Disconnect the hose that is attached to it, unbolt the valve and bolt in the new one. Of course, there is some built-in overhead cost at the dealer. You are paying...- Slorch

Front end noise...Tires? Bearings? ??
Just an FYI, and too late for WisconsinF, but wheel bearings are covered under the Ford Powertrain Warranty for 5 years or 60,000 miles. In our case it was the passenger-side rear that went out at 38.5K. Of course, our dealer "Couldn't get the part" for two weeks :wtf:, but there was no cost...- Slorch

2017 Wheels on a 2014 ---->TPMS ??s
I just put 4 OEM sensors in a set of stock rims that we're using with winter tires. Did not want to mess with 3rd-party cheapies or the supposed "Genuine OEM" ones found on Amazon for $9 each. The Motorcraft TPMS12 315Mhz sensors are $48.79 each at Rock Auto. That was the cheapest I could...- Slorch
