How to: How to: Replace Sway Bar bushings (frame only)

I did the front endlinks today and holy moly was that a pain. One of the original end links had rusted so much that they were literally bonded to the plastic sleeve and couldn't be pounded out so I had to cut it off. Look how thin the link had corroded away to in places...

how much power can the 2005 explorer 4.6 4wd differentials and transmission take

I think that in the 5R55 model number, the 55 stands for 550ftlbs rated torque handling. Tranny should be fine. The notorious flaws in the 5R55s are not from weak parts or lack of power handling AFIK.

    18.1 mpg today

Sounds about right. 4.6L with 145k and I get 19 highway at 55-65, 16-17 at 65+ and about 10-12 in town.

02 mounty wheel bearing... new rotors too?

I have about 25k on the front Motorcraft Superduty (Blue) pads, and about 15k on the rears (also blue Superduty), and no squeaks to speak of. The pads are great, they aren't even that dusty and neither set needs replaced yet.

    Towing with v8 2wd

The only people I've seen post on this board saying their tranny overheated, overflowed, burned bands, etc. was because "I was towing a boat" or whatever and "oh, didn't know you had to turn O/D off." If it's a heavy load, turn it off. If it's a couple mountain bikes or a lawnmower, then I...

    Towing with v8 2wd

Do not tow with O/D on.

    Towing with v8 2wd

    1) The towing package comes with a trans cooler (and an LS rear diff). 2) The 4.6 Explorer is rated to tow 7,200lbs 3) You'll be perfectly fine. It may even tow better than your Chevy 4x4 whatever. I pulled my old Thunderbird on a full size car hauler on the highway and it was like nothing...

    High speed wobble

I had shaky stability problems hitting bumps on the highway, it turned out that my rear sway bar was broken. I would check everything in the front end as closely as you can, control arms, ball joints, sway bar, end links, tie rods, etc. Any play anywhere means something is shot.

Serpentine belt, tensioner, pulleys. Idle now quieter!

Replaced the serpentine belt and tensioner today on my 02 4.6L, 145k miles. The belt was beginning to get small cracks but was in good shape, no idea if it had been changed before. I had noticed that my idle was starting to sound noisy as of late. Turned out the pulley on the original...

    Horrible dirty Aviator Intake

That does look pretty grimy. The PVC valve is really easy to check. I would replace it with a Motorcraft though and not a cheapo one. If you compare them side by side and blow through them there is a huge difference in quality.

    information center issues

Message center flicker sounds more like a broken wire in a door sensor, precursor to the "door ajar" problem.

Door lock or PATS system failure?? Urgent!

I narrowed it down to the rear hatch glass. To fix the problem I just unplugged the latch sensor and jumped it with a piece of solid copper wire. Good to go! Turned out to be an easy fix and free, shouldn't have put it off so long.

    Harsh shift after replacing transmission

Yeah, I don't really have anything to suggest. I drove on my dying tranny for a couple years before replacing it so it's hard to know how the new one *should* act... For example, my old dead torque converter would grind and rattle at a stop and was so loud while driving it sounded like I had a...

    Harsh shift after replacing transmission

Sorry, but I'm in a rush and didn't have time to read your whole post. I will say, after having my tranny replaced by Ford, it took a good 1000 miles on the new one for the PCM to learn how to shift smoothly all the time. The electronic transmission is very advanced and "learns" how to...

    265 70R16, will they fit 2004 explorer

Yes they will fit, that's what I have on my 02. You will notice a big difference in ride height and winter traction  For me MPG seems roughly the same, maybe 1mpg less. It's near 18-19mpg at 55-65 and 16-17 >70mph. Speedo difference is only about 2-4mph depending on speed. Not...

Door lock or PATS system failure?? Urgent!

The most bizarre problem has started happening within the last week on my 02. While driving it's as if one of the door sensors is jiggling on and off, leading to a constant alarm chime. The door locks will also repeatedly spasm as the vehicle tries to lock the doors following the door ajar...

Parking brake cable - Wrong length!?!?

Is your an early '02? Perhaps the cable for an 01 would fit... check one at the store

    steering rack and shaft issue

Have you any way to diagnose the steering rack? Seems like there's been a few threads lately about racks going bad. As for your missing front drive shaft, that's a bad sign. Your t-case is most likely shot and the person that sold you the vehicle pulled it to hide the symptoms.

Erratic idle and stalling in 4.6

I'd check around the numerous vacuum houses that connect through the intake. There could be a bad leak or it could be the IAC..?

How Long Should Timken Front Wheel Bearings Last?

Probably just as long as the original ones. The problem seems to be that the bearings are undersized and just aren't strong enough to hold up over time in the Explorer application. Makes me cringe at the idea of using a cheaper replacement than Timkens (OE?)...

Monroe rear struts for 04 Explorer

Can't really comment how they compare to the factory ones because I had broken springs. I had Monroe Reflex struts and new springs put on when I bought my vehicle used. They are somewhat bouncy but seem to do fine after a few years of use. If it's cheaper to get quick struts I'd just do that...

    Transmission rebuild NIGHTMARE

Sounds bad all the way around. I hope you don't have to find a new tranny at this point, but it might be worth considering since you'll never know what else is damaged in there. Side note, I think that the tranny has an overflow valve on top somewhere that will expunge fluid when the tranny...

8" stock sub in the rear "Blown out"

+1, there's a 13mm (IIRC) bolt that sandwiches the woofer into it's enclosure. There's a 13mm bolt and two nuts to remove to take the whole thing off that will allow you access to the rear bolt. Let us know what replacement you are able to find that fits! I didn't measure when I was in there...
