    Need a part question answered..

I was lubing a ball-joint and spied a broken vertical pin that connects to torsion bar. Can someone tell me what this vertical part is called? http://www3.telus.net/M-Design/IMG_1582-2.jpg Thanks SD

    Power steering pump or Rack&Pinion?

I believe it's the P/S pump, symptoms are harder steering resistance. What's odd though is it's been acting up for about a week, but for a few days it totally worked normally and now it's acting up again. Fluid levels are fine and I did the procedure for purging air although I don't see how air...

Some useful info regarding Acetone to boost mileage..

I was surfing my favorite conspiracy site when I ran into a thread discussing acetone as a mileage booster. I recall their were some people that were experimenting with acetone on this site, I myself haven't yet but may soon. ATS Thread: http://www.abovetopsecret.com/forum/thread169183/pg1...

    Replacement Fog / Driving Lights 1997 X

Had a rock go though a lens and Ford wants too much for replacement $150 even the used guy wants $75. I'm thinking I can get better lights for not much more. I need them too fit on the existing brackets and would like them roughly the same size as stock. Any recommendations ?? Sid

Update: Emergency Brake Pad Change 1997 Explorer

Initially I was under the impression that this would be a much tougher job then it turned out to be. I had heard that it was much easier if the axles were pulled, as it turns out if you have ever done a drum brake job before it's not much harder. The axle flange makes it a little tight to work...

OK who's fixed their own emergency brakes?

Found a couple relative threads but nothing really useful as far as tips or shortcuts that can make what appears to be a real PITA job a little less of a PITA job. I don't want to pull the axle. 97 X Sid

    Water gushes like a tap 97ex (pic-160kb)

Driving home last night, I noticed it was quite foggy out but only in back of the truck. Some hose or something blew, being optimistic I thought it may just be a main rad hose or something simple. The water is gushing from the middle area of the engine at the firewall near the top, I can't see...

Would you consider this a safe jack position.

Don't like the factory jackpoints as you can only do a side at a time and then can't use the points with jackstands. Part of the reason I ask is I put a small indent in the crossmember with a bottlejack before I invested in the 3 ton floor jack. Sid

What does the trans do when it dies? My Version

Stic-O, hope you don't mind me using your subject. Anyone that has followed this board is aware I've had tranny issues going back a ways but yesterday was the grand finale. Here's what happened, I did a 45km highway trip to get a bangle for my wife at Costco ( It was the only Bangle left thus...

    Was rearended and I wonder..

Some guy just rear-ended me tonight in his vanagon, I think he hit me only at 10km or so. Question is my truck looks fine except for a wear/tear on the hard plastic that sits on the bottom and top of the bumper, I'm going out tomorrow in the daylight to have a look under the truck. Is their...

Any Tranny shop recommendations Vancouver B.C.

I'm wondering if anyone has had a joyful experience having their 5R55E rebuilt in the lower mainland area and would be able to recommend a "Honest Tranny Guy".. Sid

    Now it's the power windows..

Started of with one of the rear windows not closing when it's door switch was used, it was very random and worked most of the time. Now the problem has spread to all the windows except for the driver's window. The driver's master window control still works for all the windows but the individual...

    1997 XLT Door Handle ( Internally )

Mechanism that allows door to open from inside broke on rear passenger door, some plastic gear like part. Another design flaw, the second poorly designed part I've encountered.. Sid

    Rear door won't open internally..

My daughter was opening the door from inside earlier and the door handle became stuck about halfway out, when I tried to push it back in it required a fair amount of pressure to unstick it. It now appears to not do anything as far as opening the door, but functions normally otherwise ( LOL ) ...

Just cleaned my MAF sensor should I..

Disconnect the battery for 15 minutes to allow the computer to relearn itself or is this not necessary? I also just sprayed the wires with carb cleaner and then let it dry, Is this a preferred method? As well I had to use a dremel to simplify removing the secure torx bolts, I would like to...

Air Conditioning (Low refrigerant or Compressor)

Recently I noticed that my truck had a refrigerant leak, I could tell because I had green on the foam surrounding my evaporator shortly after that the air conditioning failed to work and I assumed that it may simply need a refill of refrigerant. So last night I thought that I hadn't heard the...

Water leak (looks like water pump gasket)

Had a minor leak for a while now it's to the point were i'm filling the reservoir all the time this is a photo looking up from the ground. Where you see the water is the bottom of the water pump I believe. I don't know if this means anything but if I drive the car it leaks for a minute...

Jacking up the front end on 97..

I've just invested in a 3 Ton floor jack after I put a indent in my crossmember by using a bottle jack. I guess the weight of the truck on that little concentrated spot was too much. That part of the truck is OK but now I'm trying to find the best location to use with a proper 3 Ton floor...

Gear indicator lost alignment and OD flashes..

I put the truck into reverse today and the OD light started flashing, I thought that was strange so I pulled over shut down the truck and it's been oK since however my gear indicator on the dash now is out of position. I am not sure if these are related or not it's almost like maybe the...

Then I read this at the Oil Bible, now I'm a little concerned.. Oil Bible Snip -- A couple of words of warning: If you've been driving around with mineral oil in your engine for years, don't switch to synthetic oil without preparation. Synthetic oils have been known to dislodge the...
