Thanks Rob, did the explorer have an option for trans cooler? My truck has a few different radiators up front.....2002 XLT

How much trailer weight can you safely tow?

Interesting, pretty much wherever we tow this trailer it will be in hills/mountains. We are in northern CA and all the decent campgrounds are in the foothills and mountains.

How much trailer weight can you safely tow?

Local dealer ran my vin and confirmed the larger axle ratio, truck has mfg tow package, but dealer could not confirm which one. It has a standard hitch receiver (not the small one) and wiring to bumper. Searching the site for "transmission issues" has got me concerned about towing. Thanks...

How much trailer weight can you safely tow?

Thanks, I have the manual and it says 5,500lbs trailer. Guess I'm just being cautious, this truck is my work vehicle so I don't need any issues.

How much trailer weight can you safely tow?

truck just passed 100,000 on original engine and transmission. My transmission shop told me these trucks have a pin that engages at an angle and it WILL go bad. He told me about the repair they make to strengthen the faulty part. Just wondering if I am asking for trouble with that much...

How much trailer weight can you safely tow?

2002 Ford Explorer, V6, 3.75 axle, manual says max trailer weight 5,500 lbs for this motor and axle. We are thinking of getting a camping trailer, I'm confident it can tow a pop up no problem, the one we are looking at is less than 3,000 lbs. But there is nicer one we are looking at that...

    Test Driving a 98 4X4, 4.0 w-Rebuilt Motor

Thanks Steeda. Seller is going to have his "transmission guy" look at it. II told him that's great because I'm buying a 4WD so the 4WD needs to work. Let's hope seller reports back exactly what his mechanic says. Otherwise I'll have to show him the code in the operator's manual so he can see...

Where to find a Right Side Speaker Grill

on a right rear speaker grill on a 98 XLT Explorer. I've looked at many parts sites but "speaker grill"/speaker/grill/cover produces nothing. Is it called something other than speaker grill or speaker cover? or has anybody had to replace one?

Les Schwab says "3 Diff Tire Sizes"

Thanks techieman. Yes, I thought it was weird that their computer would show 3 different sizes. Ok, so if it had 235-75-r15 before, those were 28.9's using the calculator link provided in the "Lifts and Max tire" sticky thread. So the seller added another inch to the tire, how does that...

    Test Driving a 98 4X4, 4.0 w-Rebuilt Motor

Went back and test drove it again today. I don't think it shifted into 4L.....I could hear the front diff while turning in 4H, but not in 4L. The seller was cool and said he would take it to his mechanic and make sure the 4L is working. There was NO SOUND AT ALL when I turned the dial to 4L...

Les Schwab says "3 Diff Tire Sizes"

1998 Explorer XLT 4WD, no lift. I know minimal about tires, and used the search function prior to posting. I thought I wanted to put stock size all terrain tires on this truck, it currently has worn out 30 X 9.50 R-15's. The gal at Les Schwab punched in "98 Ex XLT" and said there are 3...

How many miles on your 2ND GEN EX?

I'm glad I looked at this thread, some high miles here, good to hear! going to purchase a 98 XLT with the 4.0, 214,000 miles. Runs great, some oil on the lower front of the motor, but it runs strong with no noises of any sort when shifting through the gears (auto trans). No paperwork, but...

    Test Driving a 98 4X4, 4.0 w-Rebuilt Motor

Should I be concerned that this is NOT a SOHC? Any thoughts? Doing more research on Explorers, looks like the SOHC adds more HP, are they both good motors though? HAHAHA, yeah, total noob here.

    Test Driving a 98 4X4, 4.0 w-Rebuilt Motor

Thanks again Waskly. Let's hope it's just additives. The 4.0 is a good engine right? I mean, if taken care of. Anyway, thanks again for taking time to reply to my many questions.

    Test Driving a 98 4X4, 4.0 w-Rebuilt Motor

Thanks. Seller doesn't seem like the kinda guy to switch up the fuel mixture. I'm getting the truck, so I'll do the oil change. I have a mechanic i've trusted for years, so if I have to take it in, at least he will get to the bottom of the issue. Thanks Waskly.....how about the 4W L? When...

    Test Driving a 98 4X4, 4.0 w-Rebuilt Motor

    Test Driving a 98 4X4, 4.0 w-Rebuilt Motor

Ok, I know I sound like an idiot here, but when I test drove this truck I looked at the manual and thought "depressed" meant to take my foot OFF the brake. So it must have never engaged...... Found that out on another thread http://216.198.221.184/forums/showthread.php?t=59930 So when I...

    Test Driving a 98 4X4, 4.0 w-Rebuilt Motor

Are you supposed to hear or feel anything when you switch from AUTO to 4WD L? I stopped in neutral and flipped the switch, didn't hear anything. I'm used to the floor shifter in my tahoe, so that was weird. It "felt" like it was in 4WD, but it was just weird to not feel it engage.

    Test Driving a 98 4X4, 4.0 w-Rebuilt Motor

Thanks Waskly.....ya, never owned a rebuilt motor I don't think. Seller has all maintenance records, oil every 3K, etc.....seems pretty well maintained. Can't wait to drive this truck!:D

Anybody? I've never owned an Explorer, was hoping for maybe one or two things to look for specific to the Explorer.

    Test Driving a 98 4X4, 4.0 w-Rebuilt Motor

Any thoughts on a 4.0 rebuild? Naturally, the question is "why did it have to be rebuilt?" I'm going to ask that question tonight when I test drive it. Any experiences with rebuilt 4.0's? He said there's about 80k on the rebuild. Also, he replaced the transmission 60k ago. The truck...
