    Halogen to HID/HIR Headlight Upgrade

I ended up going back to my HIR bulbs. The problem I had with the HIDs was that I had hot spots and was getting flashed all the time at night. The only way to avoid getting flashed was to angle my lights down so far that they were no longer effective for seeing anything at a reasonable...

    Tin Roof Rain noise.

Ford is working on a fix that prevents rainfall in the US, effectively eliminating the problem. I would still advise staying away from drive thru car washes tho, they're likely to trigger a PTSD response.

    Video while driving hack...

I wish my Explorer wouldn't let me put the gear selector into drive unless it knew I was buckled up...I feel so unsafe and exposed because of this...come on Ford, make this damn thing safer already!

    Halogen to HID/HIR Headlight Upgrade

Sorry, been pretty tied up with work/family....russell is correct, the metal strip should be facing down. If anyone is having a beam pattern, the bulb is likely not seated correctly...or perhaps the bulb is bad, but chances are it's installer error.

    Factory HID's

With the '11 Explorer, both the HID and halogen setups use a projection beam configuration. The lens itself might be a little different, but they're pretty similar. There are indeed other differences in the housing, as the mount for the halogen bulb is very different than the HID mount. But I...

    Nerf Bars installed

If you're keeping the other chrome accents (door handles, door blades, Explorer logo on lift gate) then I'd go with chrome for the bars, it'll compliment the other chrome pieces. I'm not a big fan of chrome, but I'm in a similar situation with our Explorer being silver. I don't think black...

    Nerf Bars installed

Thanks for the pics! I've been holding out for the LUND nerf bars, but lately their products have been sub-par. Your bars look great, my wife is 5'0" so she needs all the help she can get climbing in and out.

    2.11 killed bluetooth audio

ugh...that sucks to hear. I was having that exact same issue with v 2.8 using a Motorola Droid X and HTC Incredible phone. I was anxiously considering upgrading to 2.11 but now i'm not so sure. Fortunately my issue seemed to be phone related for the most part....pulling the phone battery...

Does it help to swap the standard halogen headlights for aftermarket brands?

Silverstars and any aftermarket halogen bulbs are a waste of money and use misleading marketing. As others have said, stay away from tinted bulbs....yes they may appear to filter out some of the characteristic yellow hue that halogens produce, but the tint is actually blocking light output so...

    Halogen to HID/HIR Headlight Upgrade

    1. I'm still looking for a good spot to put these, i have them wedged and ziptied in place until I find a permanent solution. The boxes themselves generate a good deal of heat, but I don't think they get hot enough to melt plastic....nonetheless you should take that into account when mounting...

    Halogen to HID/HIR Headlight Upgrade

Hey, sorry I haven't been able to finish the write-up...we just had our first baby so there's not much free time for me at the moment. You only need to buy a single beam 9005/HB3 kit. The high/low beams on the Explorer use the same bulb. When you activate your high beams there is just a...

    Factory HID's

For $60, why not just give the aftermarket HID kit a shot? You're going to shell out a lot of $ to get the factory HIDs, and I'm willing to bet, after you try an aftermarket kit, you'll be thoroughly satisfied.

Also, FWIW, it took about 12 days to get my order from ddmtuning.com. Their kits I believe are all drop shipped out of China, so they have to go thru customs. Out the door with shipping my total order came to $60.57. I have less than an hour of usage but so far I'm pretty happy. I did a bit...

    Factory HID's

Personally I can only recommend the 35w kit. If someone else wants to be the guinea pig and try out the 55w kit, I would consider them if they were able to run them without issue. I read this on the kryptonbulbs.com website and it scared me away from the 55w kit. It is strongly recommended...

    Factory HID's

Agreed...and since the factory halogen bulb is 55w, I don't think you're going to see a heat issue. You're most likely ending up with less heat.

    Factory HID's

Yes, just need to cut about a 3/4" hole into the rubber dust/moisture caps to allow the ballast wires to pass thru (GregV8 posted pics of this in the other discussion). The caps are like $6 a piece, so I ended up buying 2 replacement caps in case I ever needed to go back to the halogen setup...

    Halogen to HID/HIR Headlight Upgrade

UPDATE: After getting replacement dust/moisture caps that I could hack up with no worries, and trying the install again, my cutoff issue is resolved. For some reason, the bulb gave me some resistance going into the left housing and wasn't seated properly - this was causing the V shaped cutoff...

    Factory HID's

OK, I did a little more research, and I don't think they're the same housing assembly. When I looked on fordparts.com, I did in fact get the same part# for both housings....however I noticed they list the same part # for both the left and right housing too...so this makes me think the # I'm...

    Hood Deflector

I contacted customer service again because they never got back to me. This time they said I need to send them pics so their tech can look into the issue, and 3 estimates for the repair. Will follow-up once I get thru that process.

    Factory HID's

OK, so I was shocked to see this, but I just looked on fordparts.com and this does seem to be the case. EDIT: I retract this statement, I don't think that's correct after further research. However, I'd be interested to know this...most HID headlamps have an auto-leveling feature. I believe...

Check the "modified" 2011 Explorer Discussion, this has been addressed already.

Anybody else had a Panic Stop? How good was your vehicle braking?

I just had to make an emergency stop Sunday night from 55mph when someone pulled out in front of me at an intersection. I had 3 adults and my baby in the car at the time and I was very impressed with the braking. I was able to apply the brakes heavily and initiate a slight course adjustment in...

    Halogen to HID/HIR Headlight Upgrade

I wasn't using my BMW for comparison of the cutoff lines...I was comparing the left headlight (with HID) to the right side - both lights from my Explorer. My issue wasn't just the height of the cutoff, my problem was the cutoff is v-shaped, not horizontal (tried to highlight that in my pics)...

    Halogen to HID/HIR Headlight Upgrade

Thanks for posting this, I guess I'll give my HIDs another shot and try to figure out if they weren't in correctly because your cutoff lines look great. I haven't mounted my ballasts yet but I would recommend mounting them on a horizontal surface. They get quite hot so I wouldn't rely solely...
