ENJOY! How was this still drivable!?

The root cause was a loose pinion which eventually sheard off at least one of the teeth first, then I believe it proceeded to eat itself. I was pleased to find that my locker was not harmed in any way.

That's what I had been doing!

ENJOY! How was this still drivable!?

Hey guys! I found out that explorers are still driveable for at least 10,000 miles with HALF OF A RING GEAR. Who knew!?

    LED headlights

Good to know. They may have done it that way on the ones without fogs, or mine could be special. I just remembered that mine left the factory without fogs and they were later installed at the dealer. It's also an early build '02 and was one of the first thousand or so made so it has some minor...

    LED headlights

I tried the LEDs and switched back after one night of using them. If the goal is throw more light down a dark empty road the best bet is to jump the relay that turns off the lows and fogs when the high beams are on. 3rd gens have some of the best factory headlights I have ever seen and with all...

    4.0 Air Filter

As an engineer for a air filtration company I am a bit of a purist when it comes to air filters. Personally I am not a fan of filters that use oil impaction as the primary filtration mechanism (K&N etc). Over time the particle capturing efficiency of these filters drops as the oil goes away...

    Simple 3rd gen snorkel

I will try to put some more up if I can find them. I can also take some new ones. So far the snorkel has held up really well and I use an ARB snorkel top with it. I went with 2.5" piping and it works just fine. 3" would be better but it's a pain to fit it. Also I made a bracket that comes out of...

EXHAUST - I want it loud

I switched mine back to a quiet muffler, but I had it loud for a long time. If it's a 4.0 it'll never sound like a v8, but the best sound I was able to get was with a thrush welded stainless muffler right after the cat flange with no pipe after. It seems that the longer the pipe is after the...

8.8 IRS Question. Axle code 46.

They're not too bad to work on really as long as you have a good way to lock it down to your workbench. We have a u-pull-it junkyard nearby and there are a ton of 3rd gens in it now so it would be a piece of cake to grab a code 46 and pop the locker in it at home. With an 8.8 you can pull the...

8.8 IRS Question. Axle code 46.

Hello everyone, I've been running with a very messed up rear diff for awhile (loud, grinding, silver oil, etc) and I finally have the time to set it right. My ex is an '02 XLT which started out as a D4 3.73 Limited slip, but when I installed my locker I had to throw it all together to make it...

    Who's running 285/75r16?

When the suspension was stock I ran 265/75r16s and had to do some trimming of the fender liner and front bumper because I have baja rims with 3.73" backspacing and a zero offset. Since they poked out a lot more than stock they would sometimes hit the fender cladding and my snorkel pipe which...

    Biggest lift 2002 mountaineer

Any lift over 1.5" should really use the control arms. If you do a 3" and 2.5" lift without them the ball joints WILL rip out on you when you are driving.

    Door Ajar Light Stays On!!!

I don't think a scanner would be able to tell you which door it is, but if you give us some info about the problem we should be able to help you out. I'm assuming you tried the WD-40 and it didn't work? Does it come on and off when you go over bumps?

    Who's running 285/75r16?

I have a 4.0 with 285/75r16s and on average I'm getting about one mile per human soul.

2003 ford explorer 4.0 ohv swap to sohc 4.0

I wonder if they kept the OHV for the Canadian market if it is one? Is it a sport?

    Need help!!!

In order to fit 33" tires you would need to add around a 2" strut spacer in the front, a 1.5-1.75" in the rear. This would give you around a 3" lift which means you would also need custom upper control arms for the front. In total it would likely cost up to about $1,000 in parts. I used to run...

    D Shackles...where to put them?

I wouldn't recommend removing the receiver to add the D-rings because the receiver itself is a cross-member. If you can install the D-rings without removing it then you'd have a really solid setup. Also if I recall correctly the receiver supports the bumper step. There should be some various...

New Control Arms for 3+" Body Lift?

I'm not sure if he still makes them but Brandon at BTF used to make a 1.5" spacer which is about as small as you can go. An important note is that the spacer size isn't equal to the lift amount. For example a 2" spacer will give you around a 2.75-3" lift, where as a 1.5" spacer should net you...

New Control Arms for 3+" Body Lift?

Here's pretty much the lift deal, and I'll use my rig as an example: Body Lift: With a 1.5" BL (What I have) The only thing you really need to do is trim the fan shroud and a few other plastic things. If you go bigger (3" is generally the max) you'll need to extend the shaft and do quite a bit...

Just saw this on ebay and thought I would share

Interesting. The front spacer looks like a truxx style one, and the rear looks homemade. The control arms don't look too bad really either, but you would need to grind the tack welds off to change the ball joint. I have BTF arms, but all the spacers for my suspension and body lift I built myself...

    Spartan Locker

I haven't found one yet, but I believe they are only in 2wd models. There was also a version of the 3rd gen made for the postal service who I know favors 4.10s in their vehicles. Check every door and let us know what you find!

    Spartan Locker

Any 3rd gen with an axle code 46 is a 3.73 open. The differential is the same for all of them, and the 46 is likely more common in the more base model explorers. I used the carrier and pinion out of a 2nd gen solid axle, but had to set it up with new bearings/shims etc in my independent case. If...

    Spartan Locker

I have a mechanical rear locker in now and the bwm is the only way I have to stop the binding. It works, but it still puts some stress on the clutch due to the pre-load on it. With manual hubs I may be able to overcome some of the resistance.

BWM- Principals Of Our "Auto" Transfercase.

IZwack described it really well. What the PCM does is also easy to understand. In auto mode the pcm compares the front and rear wheel speeds using the sensors. If the rear is faster than the front at any time, it increases clutch pressure until both speeds match. If it cannot get them to...
