    Hunter's '96 D44 Swap

The pinion angle is going to want to land in a sweet spot between parallel pinion & t-case output angles and caster, without doing exactly as you've mentioned: cutting & re-clocking your axles "C's". This driveshaft angle is what makes high pinion axles sought after for these swaps. I did not...

    1996 Explorer 5.0L V8 Harmonic Balancer taper won't fit

I was able to verify the PN on my balancer to indeed be: F67E-AB, then there's "17436" after it.

    1996 Explorer 5.0L V8 Harmonic Balancer taper won't fit

This Ebay one *looks* to be correct like my old one, with a PN of F67E-AB. I'll have to see if I can find a PN on my balancer that matches

    1996 Explorer 5.0L V8 Harmonic Balancer taper won't fit

I’ll have to remove it again to inspect for a pn. I’ve had the truck for 13 years now, and I’m the 2nd owner, the original owner being my aunt, and trust me she didn’t change anything lol With that said, how do I know what balancer I need, besides the obvious fit? I.E. you’ve mentioned...

    1996 Explorer 5.0L V8 Harmonic Balancer taper won't fit

It is odd, but all images I can find of compatible parts show the shallow taper as well. The only one that remotely looks compatible that I just found online is a Dorman 594-155S "street" version (here). The difference in tapers shown larger here: Dorman 594-155 Dorman 594-155S Dorman...

    1996 Explorer 5.0L V8 Harmonic Balancer taper won't fit

Hey all, 1996 5.0L engine. I need to replace my harmonic balancer but all of the ones listed as compatible to my truck/engine will not work. The taper diameter/depth on the inside of the balancer does not match up with the taper on my crankshaft, nor the taper diameter/depth of the balancer that...

4R70W Transmission issues with '96 Ford Explorer

Alright, so I dug into if further today.. Took the interior apart and got to the transmission harness through the access cover underneath the carpet to find the transmission harness connector wires. It looks like something started eating through the wire insulation and completely stripped all 7...

4R70W Transmission issues with '96 Ford Explorer

It's not impossible but IMO the symptoms do not seem consistent with a TC failure. I did replace the torque converter within the last 7-8 years, as my original one did fail and caused trans fluid to leak consistently-- a symptom I don't have right now. (yes I've checked trans fluid as well, and...

4R70W Transmission issues with '96 Ford Explorer

Hey Guys, I'll start with this--everyone loves a badass picture of a beloved Ford Explorer, so here's mine: I've been having some issues lately with my transmission on my 1996 5.0L Explorer. My Explorer is a '96, but when I did my 2WD -> 4WD SAS swap, I installed a 1998 Explorer 4WD...

    Speedometer Not Working

Hey guys, I know this topic has been brought up in the past, but I cannot find anything that's helped me figure out whats going on with my speedo so far The speedometer started going out several months ago, and by that I mean it didn't happen suddenly; it would randomly drop out and then drop...

Peculiar issues after water pump replacement/oil pan swap

The coils i took off were new less than a year ago. Aftermarket from rockauto I’ve got to figure out what’s going on with these tapers before I can replace the harmonic balancer. I agree it needs to be replaced

Peculiar issues after water pump replacement/oil pan swap

Hey guys, I have some good news: nothing was majorly wrong with the engine! I think it may have been the ignition coils for some reason So I got the new harmonic balancer but was unable to install if because the location of the taper inside the bore was not the same as my old one, so it...

Peculiar issues after water pump replacement/oil pan swap

I should also add that the oil pressure gauge does read good pressure, even when turning the engine over with the coils unplugged so the oil pump seems to be working, even somewhat. The engine does not make any bad noises when it’s turning over with the ignition coils disconnected either

Peculiar issues after water pump replacement/oil pan swap

I got the new harmonic balancer. The missing tooth in the tone ring and the keyway align exactly the same. The only thing that clocked when I was trying to remove the old harmonic balancer was the isolated cast peice which has the visual timing marks on it, not the cps tone ring. So this would...

Peculiar issues after water pump replacement/oil pan swap

Hey guys, either way I’m just asking if there is a capacity difference between the two oil pans. I’ve changed the oil in my 5.0 several dozen times in my life, each time with a new oil filter, and could fill it up with 5 quarts, like the manual says. As for an update on the issues I’m...

Peculiar issues after water pump replacement/oil pan swap

Thanks Turdle-- I was wondering if whatever ended up spinning on the harmonic balancer would actually mess up the tone ring rotation/timing or if it would only mess up the markings on the balancer that I would need if I were to look at timing in the future. Could bad timing cause the knocking im...

Peculiar issues after water pump replacement/oil pan swap

I didn't mess with the oil pickup at all when I changed the oil pan, so it shouldn't be the issue Regarding the oil pressure-- does anyone know if the oil pressure switch that will ground out (shut the engine off or send a low oil pressure signal) when it doesn't see any pressure is in line...

Peculiar issues after water pump replacement/oil pan swap

Hey Guys, Over the last 2 weeks I have taken apart and pieced back together several systems on my 1996 5.0l This includes replacing my old aluminum oil pan with the stamped steel one. This required shorter fasteners to hold it on since the aluminum had thicker bosses than the stamped metal...

    Hunter's '96 D44 Swap

@WormsExplorer sorry for the late reply, but I essentially welded a key (weld tac) on the output shaft of the transfer case to accept a plastic gear to mate up with the [plastic-geared] speed sensor that came with my truck. The sensor that came with the newer truck was not driven by a plastic...

Is it possible to over-turn your steering wheel?

Thanks Massacre, that's exactly what I was looking for! If I go grab one from the junkyard, is there any way to tell when the clockspring is centered? I suppose I could center it prior to removing it from the truck, and mark it..

Is it possible to over-turn your steering wheel?

Hey guys, Quick question-- I was replacing my exhaust manifolds this past weekend, and in order to get to the driver's side bolts, I had to remove my intermediate steering shaft from the firewall to the steering box. (I have a SAS'd explorer, so custom shaft and frame mounted steering box)...

    Hunter's '96 D44 Swap

Cheeser96, I ended up making my own drag link. With the exact way mine is setup, I'm not sure that you will be able to find anything off the shelf that will fit this application since a straight link wouldn't work for me. Of course, every install is a little different and you could place your...

    Hunter's '96 D44 Swap

Thanks @Cheeser96 ! always glad to help, so shoot me any questions you have. Unfortunately, dropping money into it is one of those pesky requirements lol I actually ordered a Viair OBA system last night; 2.5 gal tank 400c compressor and remote power/gauge kit. I'll update everyone with pictures...
