    Chronic Wheel Hub/Bearing Issues, 2008, 4WD 4dr V6 XLT

You might want to check the geometry of the suspension, frame etc. for that corner. Maybe something is off that stresses the bearing but still allows for the alignment to be correct. Maybe have a frame shop check things out. There is definitely something off if you replace the bearing on the...

    LED headlight bulbs error message

Does anyone know if the fog light housing for the 4th gen Explorers also fit the 4th gen Mountaineers?

    LED headlight bulbs error message

I find that the warning is triggered only while starting the engine when it is dark outside. When the lights cycle on while it is running, I don't recall ever getting a warning to check the headlights. My guess is that starting the engine causes a voltage and/or amp drop at the headlight...

The knowledge I have gained here kept me from buying bad used Explorers and Mountaineers, allowed me to do any number of repairs...

It might be based on post count and not the time one has been a member.

My guess is that anyone that is a new member here goes through a vetting period to insure they are not a bot or a troll.

    Cruising at highway speed question

Something seems wrong if you are getting 16.5 mpg on the highway. I just took an 800 mile round trip to see the total eclipse. My path took me on I-68 and I-79 for about 40% of the trip. These interstates have severe grades. I ran about 75 mph on average on the limited access highways and...

These two videos are a good place to start.

Should I Take Mounty To Alaska, Or Rent A Car?

I would buy a manifold, gasket, needed hardware etc. and take it with me just incase it fails to the point it needs replaced. This way any shop can do the repair quickly and you won't have to try and get parts out in the middle of nowhere.

2004 4.6l started after 2 years having issues after 20 miles

It could be a catalytic convertor problem. I was driving my V8 2002 Explorer down the interstate with no problems and instantly is lost power and sounded like the transmission grenaded. Towed it to a transmission shop and they said it was a convertor that failed. A new Y pipe solved the...

    Tires for 2007 xlt 4x4 v8

We have Cooper tires on all our vehicles and have had no issues with them. Continental is another brand I would recommend, having used them in the past.

    PTU on a 2010?

Good catch. 4WD vehicles take 1.5 quarts and AWD takes 1.3 quarts.

Found vacuum leak. What to replace?

Thanks for the info. Sounds like I might have dodged a potential problem since I have a 2010 model.

Found vacuum leak. What to replace?

Did Ford revise the manifold after production of the 4.6L 3V ended or during production? If it was during production, what year did this happen?

    PTU on a 2010?

I suggest calling a Ford dealer parts department and ask them what fluid to use. Or just drive to one and buy it there. IIRC, the transfer case only takes one quart of fluid. Also, you can check the Owner's Manual but I think they might have spec'ed a different fluid from the original.

    Intermittent Charging Problem

It could be that your alternator is going bad and is intermittently failing to charge per specifications. Or it could be a bad ground somewhere in the electrical system or a wiring that has the insulation flaking off causing an issue. You can have the battery tested at about any auto parts...

Updating the software for the transmission might solve your problem. Has the transmission ever been serviced?

Shifting issue 08 explorer 6r60 transmission

I wonder how many people have had 6R60/80 transmission issues due to worn fluid and were told the transmission needs replaced when a fluid change along with clearing the TCM would have solved their problem. At least the 6R60/80 transmissions seem to misbehave which gives a warning that the...

Shifting issue 08 explorer 6r60 transmission

You are way overdue for a service. Ford's recommended service interval of 150k miles is ridiculous and has caused a massive number of failures across many transmission models. I think there is a good chance a fluid change will solve your problem since it has never been services in 186k miles...

Shifting issue 08 explorer 6r60 transmission

I recommend only doing pan drops and refilling only. As Bazz said, only replace the filter on the first drain and refill. Going forward, drain the fluid, replace the filter and refill every 50k-60k miles after this maintenance cycle. The 6R60/80 transmissions are very durable when maintained...

Shifting issue 08 explorer 6r60 transmission

To reset the TCM, disconnect the battery terminals and touch them together for 10-15 seconds. Then reconnect them and drive the vehicle normally for 20-30 minutes to give the TCM some data to tailor its shift strategy to your driving habits. Don't do this by just driving down the highway. Use...

Shifting issue 08 explorer 6r60 transmission

Bazz gave you good advice. The 6R60/80 transmissions can have issues with worn transmission fluid. My V8 2010 Mountaineer had issues shifting when I bought it at around 105k miles. I did two drain and refills within 3k miles and cleared the computer of any learned data and this has solved the...

Side to side "windy" swaying coming from the rear on high speeds

You might be in a situation where firing the parts canon is your only option. A weak strut combined with gusts of wind, turbulence from passing vehicles, etc. could be the source of your problem. Did this problem come on quickly or over a period of time?
