Why is the part number the same for most 4.0

I rebuilt transmission for quite a few years...from what I remember all 4.0 automatic starts are the same.

Traction Control Problems related to tire size?

Old thread or not, I can tell you putting a different size tire on that doesn't match the other 3 in size will screw with the traction control. I had to do it once when I had a valve stem snap off a TMPS, the spare was smaller. You will get the traction control coming on because there is a...

Violent shaking after new rims! HELP

Hub centric as in how? To have no vibration you would need to have an adapter that bolt on lug centric, then the adapter would be hub centric to the wheel you want to use. Anything other than that will vibrate.

Violent shaking after new rims! HELP

These vehicles are lug centric. If you can jack it up and get it running to look to make sure nothing is truely bent or out of round. If all looks good I'll put money on you knocked a rotor loose while swapping wheels and rust/dirt is behind it. You will definitely get decent wheel shake from...

05 explorer ac not blowing hard enough

^^^^It is this. Just remember if you pull the door out you will always have outside air blowing it....hot on warm days and you will freeze the person in that seat on cold days. I reattached the door 3 times and finally gave up...I took self tapping screws and an extension and screwed the door...

rear wheel bearing replacement 2005 explorer

If the bearing is rough, it's most likely junk. You should be able to hear some noise but it shouldn't be rough in sound or feel. As far as the lip being broken off, a shop should have known what to do to not break it. That lip is mostly for location. Look at the thickness of it, do you...

    Question on rear differentials

Not sure on the difference in part numbers but an explorer IRS 8.8 diff is pretty much the same across the board. The only real difference is the ones that have traction control. The VSS isn't in the diff anymore, the hole has a dummy plug and the tone ring isn't in the diff since the are on...

    Winch bumper 03 explorer

A bumper will be custom. I thought of a winch when I built mine but the lack of aftermarket suspension parts made me want to keep extra weight hanging off the front.

The brown wire mod. Where is the brown wire

It will depend. If you look on the back of the t-case you will see a single brown wire; that's the one. The older explorers had the t-case harness run inside the body along the pass side floor. My 05 for example all the wiring is under the vehicle and plugs into the computer at the firewall...

    Winch Bumper

Unless you have a jig to make it on measurements aren't all that important. The number sill get you close but you have to mock most up on the vehicle or have a jig to mock it to. I built a jig to hold the mounts in place for final welding.

Who is disappointed with their EX?

I'll jump on. Personally I hate my Explorer. I've owned a fair amount of vehicle and they all have problems. Mine is an 05 and have owned it since 07. I keep it maintained well beyond what is expected and have had issues since day one. You name it and it has been worked on or fixed. The...

    Winch Bumper

yeah I still have it. I made it from 1 1/2 and 1 1/4 tube, 5/16 plate for the mounts and don't remember exact gauge for the skid plate. A day I'm off I'll get some measurements, I don't have the papers anymore. I mounted it to the existing bumper mounts under the cover and added other mounts...

    Winch Bumper

That bumper and a winch look way too heavy for the front of a vehicle with limited options on beefing the suspension.

Regearing the front differential - possible solution

correct...i'm saying this super 30 is just a normal dana 30. If you call a diff supplier and ask for super 30 parts you need to specify or you will get the wrong stuff. the 35 and 30 have the same spline count but off hand i cant remember if the diameter is the same....i believe they are...

Regearing the front differential - possible solution

The dana 30 and dana 35 are different. There is some grey area with this super 30 mumbo jumbo. In true form a super 30 is a upgraded 30 spline dana 30 vs. the stock 27 spline. Being the explorer and jeep factory "super" 30 both are listed with 27 spline shafts they are typical dana 30 diff...

My 2003 Explorer 4X4 lost reverse.

If it moves forward good chance it won't be the t-case. Does is have manual 1? Sounds like a broken low/reverse band to me. The only way to tell for sure would be to pull the pan and servo to be sure. If so pretty much needs rebuild being that's one of the last parts removed and first to go...

    Lets see those heavy mods

I fabbed a real bumper after a deer wiped the bumper cover out and added a limited slip to the rear. Won't do much else being this is my daily driver that I expect to turn the key and go without issue. The grey pile in the background fills the need if I want to modify something

2002 IRS 8.8 rear end question

No c-clips on an 8.8 IRS. But if you do desire to replace stuff you will have to remove the diff assembly to pull the cover. The crosspin retaining bolt will be a 8mm head and if it doesn't want to come out heat the carrier around the bolt because it should have thread locker on it. You will...

How to: Cold air in glove box -OR- No air flow from vents on Max AC - Here's a workaround

Just did the same fix on my 05. I truely fixed mine as in put the door back in place without pulling the dash in about the same time or less to remove the door. Pull the fan as shown earlier. Pull the glove box out and unbolt it. Directly in the front there is a screw pinching the a/c duct...

    squeaking when hitting bump

If it's an 02-05 good chance it's the sway bar bushings on the frame. Matt

    2004 4.6L Transmission vs 4.0L Transmission

The above is pretty much totally true and you can't just swap bellhousings being that are cast one piece with the case. The other main difference is the V8 has an 8 lug converter with an adapter ring that bolts between it and the flex plate. Matt

    5.0 or 5.8 in a 2004 explorer

If the 4.6 fits then yes a windsor can be made to fit. Physically they are much narrower and a little shorter. As far as making all the electrical systems work correctly afterward that would be a little more difficult. The electrical would be the issue as far as making the rest of the...

    safe way to add towpoints?

You don't need to drill through the top and bottom of the frame. Have you ever seen a factory tow hook done that way? I have never seen that period. It is perfectly fine to drill 2 holes and bolt it to the frame, use washers under the nuts against the frame, not between the hook and frame...
