Stiff-armed by the dealer on a warranty issue

Find out who the Zone Manager is in the region. Lay out the details (like above) to him and ask if he can help. Perhaps he might intervene, perhaps not. Dealerships DO NOT like getting CS calls from the Zone Manager.

Mobil 1 Extended Performance vs Annual Protection

As I said; my VAST experience and DEEP knowledge of the internal combustion engine. ;)

Just got a great deal a few months ago

I had good luck with Goodyear Wrangler Radials but they are noisy. The Michelin LTX's are by far a better tire, but you'll pay for them. If the budget allows - Michelins for sure.

Same size tires two different brands

Tires will differ in circumference between manufacturers. Go to Home Depot and buy a 10' 2x4, then go to Lowes and buy a 10' 2x4. Are they going to be EXACTLY the same LxWxH? No. There are minor differences even though they are both marked with the same size. Tire sizing, and keeping the...

Can anyone identify this ticking? 2000 Ford Explorer V6 4x4 XLT SOHC

I sold it for $1500. I had a lot of updated stuff on it but it was pretty much stock.

Can anyone identify this ticking? 2000 Ford Explorer V6 4x4 XLT SOHC

That's the problem I had with my '98 SOHC. When you changed the oil did you find any guide parts/debris in the oil? Search the forum and you will find some posts (including mine) about broken guide parts found in changed oil. From what I understand and have read, changing the timing chains is...

Can anyone identify this ticking? 2000 Ford Explorer V6 4x4 XLT SOHC

Doesn't sound like alternator tick/whine nor does it sound like P/S whine, and chain slap usually come from the front passenger side. Hmmm... EDIT: Is the new tensioner you installed stuck in the back position maybe and not tensioning the timing chain against the guide??

Can anyone identify this ticking? 2000 Ford Explorer V6 4x4 XLT SOHC

My first thought was lifters but as you increased RPM it sounds like timing chain slap. Can you identify where it is coming from? Front of the engine, passenger side?

    4.0 V6 chain rattle - Percentage

I got 213k out of mine before I sold it with the rattle. With some more TLC it probably would have gone 250k but the person I sold it to abused it and it let go finally at about 230k.

    Best Battery

I put a Sams Series 65S 700CCA {650 is the spec} battery in my '98 when I needed one. It was installed for a few years when I sold the car in September of last year. Paid about $100 for it. Was it the 'best' battery? Probably not. Was it the 'worst' battery? Probably not. But it worked...

    Replacement seat covers

+1 on The Seat Shop. I had these guys do my '98 seat bottom with an OEM cover that came out like it was brand new. Very nice folks to work with and reputable. I visited their ship (its about 10 mins from my home) and they are a couple of young guys with half a dozen or so employees and they...

what do you guys think about these headlights?

Oh man, when you posted "what about those headlights!?" I though you were talking about the latest centerfold!! Silly me! (..sorry guys, couldn't resist.)

    Tire recommendations

Is the Wrangler RT/S the same as the Wrangler Radial? The WR was a pretty good AT/AS tire for me. Had 2 sets on my Ex. Also, a pretty big seller for G'Year. Not that those provisions make it a top notch tire, just a pretty good average performer.

    Cruise control buttons

Fairly simple to replace as long as you are slow and methodical. It requires removing the airbag module to get to the connectors underneath. You can find replacement sets at Ebay and Amazon and you maybe could find them at a salvage yard, but those have usually already been removed.

Looks like a pretty aggressive tire with high shoulders. Wonder how quiet it will be.

    Tire recommendations

I've run the Mich's before and you certainly can not go wrong with a set. I've also run the Goodyear Wrangler Radials and if you are on the budget they are a great all round tire for about $90 each.

    Lock Combo!?

IIRC on the Gen2 Exp's it was on the inside of the drivers side interior rear wheel well. It required taking off the interior trim panel and using a dental mirror or extension mirror to read it. I suppose it would be in the same place for the 05's, but I am not completely positive about that...

    Removing rear driveshaft question

Glad to hear new u-joints fixed the problem. Yes, the boot covers the single cardan joint which is a type of CV joint.

Looking for someone who can fix the legendarily bad timing chain in my '98.

Sound advice in re; Limited Trim. Yes, you get all the bells and whistles and happy doodads, but that means there are that many bells, whistles and doodads that can go wrong. In the Edge Limited I'm in now - whew!! I have never seen so many tech features in an automobile! Not to mention the...

    Carbon Monoxide Leak?

Big story tonight here in Dallas about an officer that passed out and ran up a curb due to a carbon monoxide leak into the cabin. All PIU's in Austin PD are now equipped with commercially available cm detectors and any PIU's ordered for any LE in the future must have cm detectors factory...

Looking for someone who can fix the legendarily bad timing chain in my '98.

You are on the same situation I was in about a year ago. My Gen2 was in great condition other than the timing chains. I eventually had to cut the cord and sell her. As much as I hated to see her go after 15 years and 213k miles, a $1500-$1800 repair bill was more than the truck was worth (see...

Weird noise coming from brake booster.

I think Turdle is on to something. The only thing that could make a rotational sound on the left side of the engine bay (assuming the blend door has been ruled out) is the squirrel cage fan of the blower. And, the blower housing >might could< be confused with a brake booster. In the old days...

Weird noise coming from brake booster.

I can't add anything much more to what Koda said other than to affirm that it is a PITA to do. Search on 'blend door' and you will find a number of thread dealing with a fix. Also, once you confirm that it IS the blend door there are a kit style fixes that are available. And even through...

Weird noise coming from brake booster.

Typically a failing brake booster will make a hissing sound, indicative of a failing diaphragm XLT mentioned above. Also the pedal will be initially rock hard then slowly turn to mush as the brakes grab. The blend door on Gen II's is located underneath the glove compartment so I would think...
