    2016+ low speed surging

Both of our 16’s do it. Mostly in the summer when the humidity is high. It’s condensation in the intercooler. Probably can throw parts at it all day and it won’t be fixed.

2016 front bumper removal...they added 6 extra bolts that year, how to access?

Turn the wheel full lock one way. 5.5mm takes the inner fender loose. 6 or so 8 mm underneath. 10 mm across the top. Once you have the top of the headlights loose, there are 3 10mm bolts down and behind them. You can either wrench them out from the fender well, or use a long extension with a...

Does anyone actually love their 5th gen Explorer?

Absolutely. 16’ Sport and 16’ Platinum. Both have been great thru 25k. Our 2013 Limiteds were ok, but, we’ll keep these long term.

Need advice in replacing alternator on 2014 Explorer

Remove the cooling fans. Remove the right front wheel. Remove the right front inner fender. Remove the nut and bolts. The nut you removed is a stud. Remove the stud and lift the alternator out the top.

    2018 Explorer XLT alarm mystery

Try your other fob. My 16’ Sport had an overly sensitive fob off the lot. Doors mysteriously locked or unlocked, lift gate opening, panic alarm, etc...Luckily I was nearby when the gate opened by itself.

    Should I buy an explorer

16’ Sport and 16’ Platinum have been great so far.

    Factory oil filter dissection

Very Nice! Thanks for sharing. I think the dye they put in the oil at the factory makes it look funny. You will find the oil doesn’t stay “clean looking” in these engines long. Our 2.0l EB Escape is worse.

2016 ecoboost sport is a turd

My 16’ Sport has been pretty good, although I’m only at 19k. Had the intermittent “radio off” issue which was just a Service message/reprogram. Original hankooks were shot at 15k. Replacing them with Pirellis improves the ride and driving characteristics overall, so I guess I’m ok with that...

    motor oil debate.

Bobistheoilguy.com. All you will ever need to know about oil. Several used oil analysis provided by memebers with Ecoboosts. EB’s seem to love Castrol Magnatec. $17 for a 5qt on Amazon. Run a Motorcraft filter. Change intervals vary. Personally I change my 3 EB’s twice a year. 5,000 mile...

2016 Sport vs. Platinum Suspension - Any Difference?

16’ Platinum, Front, 32.5”. Rear, 33.5” 16’ Sport. Front, 32”. Rear, 33.25” I just used a tape measure, but you get the idea. This is concrete garage floor to the center of the wheel opening. Both have about 20k miles on them. If I think about it, I’ll measure a PIU.

License Plate frames for newer Fords?

ditch the rubber bumpers. Pull them out and the square for the plastic insert is there. Most auto parts stores have the insert/bolt.

    towing package myths ??

I’m sure uneven tire pressure/wear could be a factor if the difference is enough. At the end of the day, it’s not the most robust AWD system anyway. So, if I’m consistently towing with my Explorer, I would want the liquid cooled PTU to gain whatever extra benefit it provides.

    towing package myths ??

well, honestly, I don’t think the cooler makes that much difference. 15’, 16’, 17’ have had an updated PTU, or a TSB to update it. We’ve had three 14’s fail, a 15’ and a 16’. All failed before 50k which is where we target service. All five were catastrophic, cracked case. I think the cooler is...

    towing package myths ??

Pretty sure the PTU cooler is standard on all PIU, Sport and Platinum. All 80 of our PIU’s have PTU coolers. All 3.7L. Never an option to not have it. My personal Sport and Platinum also have the liquid PTU coolers.

    Front Hub / Bearing Replacement

1 1/4”. Some of the hubs I’ve replaced are a challenge to remove. Good luck.

3.5L Ecoboost Owners - What MPG are you getting?

The dash says 16.7 avg. Mostly city driving, and an active right foot. It will achieve @ 23 on a road trip.

    Big Decision

If there’s any desire to get the Sport, you should. We bought new 13’ Limiteds and they were great. BUT, that Sport was always in the back of my mind. So, late 2016, our dealer made us an offer we couldn’t refuse. Upgraded to a 16’ Sport for me and a 16’ Platinum for the wife. We have about...

Really dumb question but I have to ask

Comparing an 02’ AWD Durango to your Platinum is like comparing apples to elephants. The “intelligent” AWD system in the Ex is there working, all the time, especially in the Platinum and Sport. Does the Platinum have the AWD monitor in the left screen? If so, check it out sometime. You’ll see...

    PTU Problems

It’s an in service police vehicle, so it is driven hard. Build date is 3/16 if I remember correctly. But catastrophic failure at 13k doesn’t bode well for the PTU update. That’s the 4th failure out of about 80 PIU’s we have on the street. The first 16’.

    PTU Problems

Just had a 16’ PIU scatter it’s PTU at 13,x.. miles this week. Left a nice exit wound in the case. That tells me the reliability hasnt increased that much through 16’. We’ll see how the 17’s do.

Interior Door panel issue / separation

If you’re handy, get a tube of super glue, and an extra set of hands if available. Hold the vinyl covering up while you apply a generous bead of glue the full length of the section that’s separating, near the edge of the plastic panel frame. Quickly roll the vinyl underneath the plastic where...

Water pump failure leads to dead engine

Man, I wish all I had to worry about in life was if my water pump was going to go. Four 3.5’s in the family. Two around 100k, no problems. 80+ PIU’s I’m responsible for, half around 60k, no problems. Best friend is a service advisor for a large Ford dealership, very rare occurrence. Nothing to...

Just bought 2015 sport, loss of power

Does the noise change with the speed of the vehicle? Does it feel like the brakes are being applied or just no no power? The reason I ask is, we’ve had a few Interceptor Utilities trash their PTU’s. One in particular was intermittent for awhile before it totally quit moving. The worst...

Fair 5th Generation Explorer Maintenance Question

Both of our 13's were in the mid 50's when we caught ecoboost fever and traded them in. They both had the bubbly hood issue and one had the "shift to park" problem. No biggie. All taken care of under warranty. Our 02' had more issues than our gen 5's. Our 2 16's have been great so far. I think...
