How to replace upper intake manifold gaskets

I used this set: https://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=2646770&jnid=2&jpid=0 No problems two years latter. My intake plenum looked like crap too. Just like described above. I'll also have to keep that EGR tube O-ring in mind for the future. Mine was a pain to remove so a leak there...

    Dash Thump?

Thanks for the suggestion. No modification to cooling system. Strangest thing is it only did it 3-4 times when extremely cold. Can't replicate it now. May have to wait til next winter and see if it happens again. I do have a flush planned within a few weeks.

    Dash Thump?

My 98 Ranger (4L OHV) started having a muffled rhythmic thump mid dash. Behind the radio/heater controls etc. Very confident it is not from the engine compartment. Also, not every trip and only seems to be during the cold temps (<20F). It does it for less than a minute or so when it is starting...

Problem found in 4/2001 explorer a/c heater is knocking loudly behind mid consul

I gotta bump this one. Do you mean dash or console?

    Transmission Help please anybody! PLEASE!

How is the fluid level? When was it serviced last? Does it smell "burnt"? First thing I do is check the fluid level if I have any tranny issues. Might be too late for this but might have been the cause of bad things. You said no CEL, but does the tranny set CELs in these vehicles? I really...

    Timing Cover Coolant leak

Like above, not a huge deal but if it is the OHV V6 I'd take a real close look at the water pump. I had one that slow leaked for a year. If parked for a day or two you'd get a few drips but not a direct path to ground so difficult to tell the source. If it leaks while you are moving it blows...

    Strange beep when engine off

Really never heard that one before. My first instinct would be to disconnect the battery for an hour or so and then reconnect.

    Considering a V8 Project

This is some great info. I wish they would have just made a v8 Ranger too. Kinda got me leaning toward starting from scratch and finding a later 2wd in decent shape and a wrecked explorer. I sort of like all the different generations. Not sure I could pick a favorite. Might just continue...

    Considering a V8 Project

Dang that is tight. Still into it though. Sounds like it'd be easier to take the donor engine and tranny together. Gonna have to start making a list for when the time comes. Certainly not until this winter is over. About 12 degrees with 30-40 MPH gusts right now. Thanks for the info!

    Considering a V8 Project

Now you've both really got me intrigued! Wish it wasn't about 2 degrees out there. Regardless, seldom use AC anyway so it's not so important but would probably try to keep it. I've always thought there was alot of room in the bay which is nice to have. If I was swapping into the 98 I'd stick...

    Considering a V8 Project

My 83 was from NE PA and had quite a bit of rust on the rear fenders when I finally got rid of it. Could have been replaced easily but, like you, had to sell it when I moved. Thanks RangerX. I've seen that tech section on TRS. I spend some time on that and a few other Ranger forums. Probably...

    Considering a V8 Project

Seems like a decent price to me but the pictures were way too few for a real good assessment. I always wanted to do something like that. Wish I kept my 2wd 83. That was a good little truck. Only had a carbed 4cylinder with a 4 speed manual tranny but would have made a great starting point...

98' Ranger w/ manual locking hubs problems

Sounds like your Tcase switch or shift motor may be defective. Do you hear the motor working? I know the shift motors can fail. http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/TCaseshiftmotor.htm And another: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1102904 Maybe?

    1999 4X4 Ranger

You probably have the PVH POS system like me. Can you tell I'm bitter :-) Think they only ran from 1998-2000 because they were that bad. I just did this: http://www.therangerstation.com/Magazine/Apr04/offroad.htm Mine kept failing to engage after checking all the vacuum connections etc. The...

Just found out I've got a "one wheeled wonder"

Wow lots of activity since I was online last. I think the above pretty much nails the info the OP was looking for and then alot of great info followed that I didn't know either. Again I'm a Ranger owner, which seems to have a pretty simple system compared to the Explorer if we ignore my hateful...

Just found out I've got a "one wheeled wonder"

Yep you've got an open 8.8 Ford rear diff with 3:73 gears (46).

    My 4.0 misfires when cruising.

Could be. Or the new TPS is defective. I've seen that before. Did you use MAF cleaner when you cleaned the MAF? Really the only thing you should use. Those things are touchy. MAF replacement is easy but get a good one. I try to get Motorcraft as much as possible. Always great quality but...

    My 4.0 misfires when cruising.

I'd say carbon knock! Mine does it periodically and then I use PM-3 and follow the TSB. I only use one can at a time. Maybe if I did the three repetitions it would last longer. I do this about once a year. Great product and cheap at the dealer. Check this out...

    My 4.0 misfires when cruising.

How many miles? Wouldn't hurt to clean the MAF. It could cause sputtering and sluggishness but not really a true misfire. How's your fuel filter? Is it carbon knock or detonation?

Just found out I've got a "one wheeled wonder"

I wish I was more familiar with the Explorer Tcases but most have a drain plug near the bottom and a fill plug part way up the case. On my Ranger they are on the rear of the tcase. I have to remove the weight (Dampner) to get to the plugs but not difficult. Always make sure you can loosen the...

Just found out I've got a "one wheeled wonder"

X2, I'd bet on the shift motor but Have you checked the fluid level in the Tcase? Also, You can get all 4 wheels off the ground (be safe) and see if the front driveshaft moves when you put it in 4HI. If it doesn't then you Tcase didn't shift, if it does then your diff is toast or your hubs...

Is this the right hose for SeaFoam treatment?

For the OP, I know this whole thing started with Seafoam and I've used it before with some success but with my 98 OHV and the recurring carbon knock these things are known for I found this works better...
