    High Mount Brake Light Problem

So my sister needed a car, so I permanently "loaned" her my 1994 XLT. She's down in Virginia and apparently the brake lights stopped working. She took it to a shop that replaced the brake light switch at the brake pedal. The main brake lights are now working, but the tech says that he...

    Wife's Minivan Repair Thread

As some of you know, I posted an earlier thread about my wife's 01 Town & Country minivan and the damage from a minor accident. I removed the interior trim yesterday morning with the intention of just looking to see what access was like and then putting it back together for another day. The...

    Wife's Minivan

I see my other thread was closed over the heated discussion on the subject  but I just wanted to let you know that those of you that estimated about $1200 were right on the money. The estimate came back at about $1202. That leaves me with $700 over my deductable-- I think I can...

Wife's Kid-Hauler Damaged-- Can you estimate cost?

Hi, I know it's not an Ex, but was hoping one of you pros (Monmix maybe?) could take a look at these pics and give me your guestimate of what it might cost to get this fixed. It's the wife's '01 Town & Country minivan. Thanks!

    EGR Solenoid Valve

I'm trying to figure out a problem on a friend's '03-- it has a whistling sound from under the hood while driving that I thought was from a vacuum leak. I disconnected the vacuum tree from the intake manifold and connected a vacuum pump to each of the lines that go off of it. I was able to...

    Ford Remote Start Question

I have the older Code Alarm dealer-option remote start/alarm and have a question. The system seems to be in valet mode so it won't arm or remote start. I know where the little button is, but don't have instructions and can't figure out how to turn of valet mode. Does anyone know? Thanks

    Transmission Pressure Tester

When using a pressure tester to diagnose a transmission, do I need to allow the ATF to fill up the hose that goes to the gauge (i.e. let the air in the hose bleed out), or do I just attach it dry? Thanks!

    SOHC Intake Manifold Gasket

I'm thinking about buying a 98 explorer with the 6 cyl SOHC engine for what seems like a bargain-basement price. The CEL is on and the guy says it was diagnosed as a leaking intake manifold gasket. Is that hard to replace on an SOHC engine? (I've done regular engines, but not an SOHC.)

Is 6 Quarts of Oil Bad?

My sister had my X (94) for a little while and took it to a quickie lube place for an oil change-- after she refused a new fuel filter and air filter, they teased a little extra cash out of her by telling her they needed to put 6 quarts of oil in the engine and charging her for the extra quart...

    Y-Pipe Question

I recently removed and reinstalled my Y-Pipe to do some transmission work-- since then I've noticed a repetitive "pffft" sound that increases in rate with engine rpm. I'm thinking (but haven't confirmed) that it's a leak where the Y-pipe meets the exhaust manifold. Does anyone know if there is...

    Decent Replacement Clutch

Well, my clutch is slipping-- as far as I can tell it's because of oil contamination from a bad rear main seal. I'm planning to replace the clutch (and seal) myself, but wanted your input about what is a decent clutch to buy. I found an eBay deal for $210 +$25SH for: 1. LuK Pressure...

    Question for Cold-climate people

I'm thinking about installing a heater to keep my engine warm and wanted to know if anyone has experience with oil heaters. Of course most people use block heaters, but the oil heater is easier to install and claims to be better. For those who don't know, the oil heater is a heater pad that...

    A/C Refrigerant Oil- what kind

I know it's a strange time to be asking A/C questions, but my system is open and I want to get it together and recharged so, my question: I'm pretty sure I need to use PAG oil, but the auto place sells different viscosities. The guy at AutoZone said I should use PAG-150, is this the correct...

    Power steering line.

I have my power steering apart and could use a quick answer so I can get my truck back on the road-- Can I use transmission cooler hose for the return hose from the steering gear? I have some good transmission cooler hose on hand, but don't have any power steering hose. What do you think?

    Fuel Pump Replacement

I'm in the process of replacing a rusted brake line next to the fuel tank-- well that's fixed already, but when I dropped the tank to get to it, I noticed that the fuel line fittings are seriously rusted and at risk of breaking. I'd like to replace the fuel pump assembly and have been reading...

    Brake Line Repair

[For the short version, skip to the third paragraph.] Well, the X left me on the side of the road for the first time last Friday. The brake pedal got really soft and unresponsive, so I pulled over and called a tow truck. When I opened the hood, the brake fluid was almost gone from the...

How Much For Parting Out First Gen?

I see a lot of people parting out their rigs, so I thought it would be interesting for everyone to know if you can get more selling it or parting it. .

    Spilled Gas Inside Explorer

I had to pick up some gas for the snowblower yesterday, so I filled a 5 gallon gas can and put it on the floor behind the driver's seat (left plenty of air space above the gas and thought I closed the container tightly.) After I started to drive, I smelled gas, so I pulled over, took a look and...

    Installed Alarm--Problem--It's buzzing

I just finished installing a Ford OEM System 6 Alarm/remote entry system on my X. Everything tested great, so I put it back together. I found this problem when I started the engine-- the alarm box starts buzzing every time I push in the clutch. I know its not supposed to do this and it...

    Block Heater or Oil Heater

I may have to deal with some extreme cold this Winter and I'm thinking about adding an electric heater to the engine. I've seen a few different types: 1) Block heater-- seems to put the heat into the engine block right where you'd want it. 2) in-line hose heater-- not sure exactly what...

    Window Regulator

I think my last post on this was too long  Does anyone know what usually goes wrong with the front window regulators when they "wear out"? If I can, I'd like to fix mine instead of buying a new one. (I saw a write-up here on a cheap fix for the window motors and got inspired.)

    Stuck-Up Window Regulator?

If I put my driver's window all the way up, it gets stuck. The first time this happened I thought the motor was bad-- I wish I had tested it  -- I bought a rebuilt and installed that and the window went up and down again. I put everything back together, returned my "core" and went...

    Watch out for this one!

I took my Durango in to a fast-lube place for an oil change (I usually do oil changes myself, but I'm a bit behind so wanted to get it done.) After the truck was on the lift for a few minutes, the tech comes into the waiting room with a piece of white paper with three greasy black smears on it...

Limited Slip and Mobil 1 Syn Gear Oil

I'm taking a long trip in my x today so last night I decided it was time to drain and refill the transfer case and front and rear diffs with synthetic. I have a limited slip rear and put in Mobil 1 75W90, but did not add friction modifier. The bottle says it prevents chattering in limited...

    First Gen Alignment Problem

After doing a bunch of front-end work last June, I took my 94 XLT to Sears for an alignment. All came out within specs, but when I drive on the highway, I have to point the steering wheel a little to the right to go straight. It's not much, but just enough to be annoying. If I let go of the...
