Worth it for a beginner? Ford Explorer Service Shop OEM Manual

Number Twelve is correct, I find YouTube is the best. That being said, the first thing I do is buy a service manual. One day you will need it. I have used mine. I think for $39 I would buy it. You could easily save that in repairs the first time you open the book. Go Buy it. Tom

Solved Transmission servo piston shaft broke in the bore.

Everyone learns by their mistakes, that's how we learn. But, and I mean this in a good way, I think you are way over your head. Your cheapest way out is to have it done by a reputable shop. If you keep tinkering with it, it's only going to cost you more. I've been there. Tom

2005 Explorer. Broken shifter, part name, availability

In all honesty that's probably a fair price. I'm assuming they will take it off. I had a similar problem with my Aviator last year. Floor shift had a rod or linkage break. I was out of town, so I had it towed to a tranny shop. They fixed it the next day, but it was somewhere around $300 to...

2005 Explorer. Broken shifter, part name, availability

I'm sure this is nothing that you haven't thought of, but every junkyard that I have been to, has had an abundance of Ford Explorers. Go to a "you pick" yard and take it off yourself. Good Luck Tom

02 Mountaineer, timing chain chatter, low oil pressure

Like you, I think, it would be tough for me to turn my back on your Mountaineer. I think I would do the repair job. The value of your car isn't going to be any different now than after I repair job that won't fix the issue. You'd probably be out $5 or $6 hundred dollars. But with your good...

Any recommendations for Auto Repair in Atlanta Georgia?

Probably a long shot but here goes, not knowing exactly what the grinding sounds like. When I got my Aviator, a couple of years ago, one of the first things I had to do was replace the rear blend door actuator. It is located exactly where your son told you. It's located in the rear...

    Transmission issues

Dude, you need to start your own post, rather than mess up the original poster's thread! I would delete your two postings on this thread and start your own thread. Tom

Is this Mounty worth $450? Lots of pics

Nice find "Number4"! Us northerners would kill for a body as good as that. Replace that hitch? We call that mint. We'll be heading to St. Simons Island GA next week for the winter. My favorite thing to do, is hit the JY's. Tom

    Worth Fixing?

Put it on CraigsList. You never know, it might be exactly what someone is looking to find. Emphasize the good points, maybe interior, exterior and relatively low mileage. Tom

Saga of a new ( to me ) 2002 Mercury Mountaineer

Imp I would have no problem buying a fleet maintained car. They know how important it is to keep the car up to stuff. Car rental companies, I'm sure, probably don't keep them more than a year. A friend of mine is in the taxi business in Boston. They would buy ex police cars probably at...

Saga of a new ( to me ) 2002 Mercury Mountaineer

I think a lot of us have similar stories, no matter what type of car we have. I bought a 2003 Aviator two years ago. My list looks the same maybe a little longer. Mostly maintenance as yours, with a few small repairs. The first year I spent 2300 on M & R, the second year it dropped down to...

    Worth Fixing?

I think you answered your own question, Steve. I don't think it's worth fixing for $3800, for an engine with 112K on it. In fact I know it isn't, that's crazy money. I would shop around, first for a new mechanic and then for a used engine. I would say getting a good used engine from a wreck...

I was looking for that. Where is it located in a 2003 Aviator?

    Brake light switch failure

Parked the Aviator downtown to do a couple of errands., Came back, started right up. Cannot put the car in gear. As I have had to replace part of the linkage, that was my first thought. But symptoms were different. I had the Mrs. take a look at the brake lights while I pushed the...

    Tow hitch question

James I have an 2003 Lincoln Aviator. It has the towing package, 3.73 rear end etc. But, it came with a class 2 hitch and 4 pin flat plug. I was junkyarding one day and came across a Mountaineer with a Class 3 and a 7 pin plug. Four bolts, I believe, and off the hitch comes. Also I...

Restart of Accessing Fuel Pump from above thread

I have never cut an access hole to an Explorer family veichle. But, I am into Roadmaster Station Wagons and have cut them in those. The wagon tank is held on by straps. So, I could actually lower the tank an inch or so, without dropping it completely. I cut the sheet metal with a dremmel...
