    Moving On...

I also moved on. Kept putting money into this truck hoping to get a couple of years out of it, but at 150,000, the transmission started slipping on the 2-3 upshift. Not sure what was going on but decided to trade it off while I could still drive it. Got $2,000 on a trade for a 2016 Tacoma. No...

What kind of motor oil do you use?

Bertolli EVOO and a coffee filter.

    4.0 SHOC life expectantcy

This. Mine is an 02 with 150,000 miles on it that I use primarily for commuting to and from work, about 35 miles a day. After I bought it last winter, I inspected the guides, swapped the tensioners, including the main one and so far so good. I avoid jackrabbit starts, don't downshift...

Possibly blew the engine of my 2004 Explorer

Hell, if you could do this for 2 grand, I'd consider driving it to you from NH and chilling in a hotel for a couple of day while it was in your shop. My 4.0 valve train is quiet for now, but at 150,000 miles I'm on the fence between selling the truck and/or doing this work preventatively.

Possibly blew the engine of my 2004 Explorer

That includes pulling the engine? Damn, maybe I'll set up an appointment.

Possibly blew the engine of my 2004 Explorer

Define, "a little longer". Like boomin said, you're looking at least a 10 hour job for a shade tree mechanic. If you have a shop do it, you're probably looking at somewhere between $1,000-$1,500 with parts. That repair may last a while, but inevitably, the rear one is gonna do the same...

    Transmission - It's time

I believe all the 4.0 SOHC's from this era are the Cologne engines made in Germany.

How To: 2002 Fuel Filler Neck Replacement

Nice write up. Thanks for taking he time!

Has Anyone Changed Out the Filler Neck?

Pretty much the same thing I did. I had to use a little petrolatum (Vaseline) on the end of the new metal tube to get the hose to slide back on. I do not remember coming across that plastic liner thing either.

I'm guessing he's looking at the balance shaft chain.

    02 Exp Timing chain rattle?

Mine was very similar with the rattle most pronounced between 1800-2200 RPM while accelerating. After inspection, I ended up replacing the primary tensioner in the front. That was 10,000 miles ago at 137,000 or so and it's quiet as a church mouse. Take the time to diagnose the problem first...

How to: SOHC V6 Timing Chain Inspection & Repair

I had very similar symptoms on my 02 with 137,000 at the time. Last spring, I pulled the valve covers to verify the guides were good (which they were) and pulled the front cover and replaced the main tensioner. It wasn't broken but was a weak 3 blade spring. After replacing it with the new...

If ANY timing chain broke on a 4.0, you're money ahead just changing the engine.

    Possible rattle between 2500-3000 rpm???

Are they saying for a FULL timing chain job on a 4.0 V6? That would take a very focused technician with proper facilities, experience and tools about 24 labor hours...MINIMUM. If they are talking about tensioners only, 10 hours seems plausible.

    Possible rattle between 2500-3000 rpm???

I had the same symptoms with my 02 4.0 SOHC. Here is a link to the thread and to another where I chatted with another guy going through the same thing.. HTH.. http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=424021 http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=425212

Has Anyone Changed Out the Filler Neck?

That was my first plan, but I couldn't find any 1.25" hose locally and figured if I was gonna order parts, I'd just as soon get the whole thing. As rusty as it was, I'm glad I did.

Has Anyone Changed Out the Filler Neck?

This is the one I ordered.. Straight from amazon.com http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IWS41IY?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00 The last foot or so is a 1.25" rubber tube that goes into the tank. I couldn't find the stock hose locally so I didn't bother replacing it.

Has Anyone Changed Out the Filler Neck?

Yeah, I looked at a ton of threads but I guess nothing works better than crawling under the truck. Anyhoo, I went ahead and changed it out this morning and was I EVER glad I did. No need to drop the tank. Here's what it looked like after i took the old one out: Never happy unless I...

Has Anyone Changed Out the Filler Neck?

Mine's leaking where the upper part meets the rubber hose section and I'm going to just change the whole thing back to the tank. Anything I should be aware of, like does the tank have to come out, and special gaskets or seals needed? The Ford parts diagram on line isn't very specific...

    What is leaking?

I had a warranty issue with Ford last year for the transmission in my 2011 Mustang. The dealership was a joke and couldn't fix the thing to save their lives. I called Ford customer service 2 weeks in and was blown off with "Dealers are independent and are not under our control" It ended up...

    4.0L sounds like a diesel

I'm sure others will chime in, but I'll take another listen on better speakers when I get home.

    4.0L sounds like a diesel

When you say drivers bank, is it coming from the front, rear, top? I'm trying narrow down the source since there are lots of things that could cause what you're hearing. Not sure why something would go away when restarting unless something is hanging up for some reason.

    4.0L sounds like a diesel

That almost sounds like an exhaust leak, but you lose something with sound through these tinny speakers I have. Could be a weak timing chain tensioner spring, which would explain why it goes away once oil pressure takes over. The drivers side one is easy to change, lots of threads on it.

    Did I kill my Explorer???

Hard to say exactly what happened from your description, but the end result sounds like your engine is lunched. That said, you never know and maybe you'll get lucky.
