Finally got around to doing the voiceover for the locker install ... it's really rather simple, but getting to it and putting it back in the truck ... that part is a PITA!

Pretty sure it was a package option and the previous owner didn't opt for the LSD.

Locker install was a breeze ... unfortunately, I have an hour of footage of me talking to a dead mic ... FML! I'll have a detailed install video here shortly, just need to spend an hour or so dubbing what I splice together ... unfortunately, I can't do anything about the blurry segment of me...

Almost done ... just need to fit the locker now.

Took a little while to do the "shim shuffle", but nailed it on the 4th attempt. 1st attempt had a huge backlash, 2nd nailed it but once I put the caps on and applied torque to the cap bolts, it got super tight. 3rd attempt was close but just a little too tight. Never did find my depth gauge...

Waiting on my Harbor Freight 12 Ton press (going to do the rear wheel bearing while I'm in there), so in the meantime, time to ream out the old pinion bearing to set preload in order to drop in the carrier and test backlash and gear pattern. This was yesterday. Today I'm doing the same to the...

Part I: Unistalling the Spartan from the Salvage yard unit that wasn't compatible ... didn't find out until I went to plug in the sensor. Doh!

Long story short, got the salvaged unit pulled apart, inspected and installed the Spartan locker without much fuss. Dropped the stock unit and noticed something was different ... the salvaged unit didn't have the speed sensor so I swapped it over and then though how the hell is it reading the...

So the salvaged 3.55 and Spartan are on their way ... I should have them next week ... time for a build thread & video (I have a YouTube channel completely unrelated to cars/trucks/mechanics that I sometimes vlog on).

I too am interested in the answer. Based on some YouTube research, this can vary greatly and I'm not sure if it's install or component related or a combination of the two. In some, it seems that they click and pop at odd times and some are quiet as can be 90% of the time with a light ratcheting...

So that the job is a quick and easy turnaround, I went ahead and ordered a salvaged 3.55 rearend on eBay along with a case gasket so I can split it open and give it a thorough inspection upon arrival. I also plan on getting a set of new seals (pinion & output/carrier), pinion nut and yoke sleeve...

If that's the case, I may as well just stick with the 3.55 and rebuild the rear end and drop in an LSD aftermarket solution as...

So my 3.55 Open rear end is so damn loud that I suspect it's going to fail any day now. I've wanted limited slip for some time now for better winter traction in the snow and general wet/slippery conditions. So I figured why not replace the front & rear diffs with the 3.73 LSD units and cure both...

I bought these brand new in 2008 and then had to shelve a project that I wanted to do with them. As a result, they have been sitting in my garage overhead storage for the past 6 1/2 years brand new, never installed. They come with the install instructions, bolts/washers & gaskets. Price...

The downside to the AWD 4.6L V8's is that the 3.55 is also an open diff :( I too would be interested in dropping in some 3.73 LSD units front & back into the wife's 02' Mounty V8 AWD. I think Ford's choice of both the 3.55 ratio and the open diff is for fuel economy. I figure an LSD 3.73...

Most likely the shift motor is burnt out
