    1998 4.0 ohv motor rebuild

Update: Both heads had cracks in them. I did plan on replacing with stronger aftermarket anyways because of that problem with these year motors. Heads Up machine shop is only 5 miles from my house and they have casts in stock. It takes them 3 business days to machine them out and instal parts...

    1998 4.0 ohv motor rebuild

The motor that I purchased has the EGR setup that I believe was for California smog emissions crap. Since I already have the wiring harness, correct computer, left exhaust manifold and upper intake manifold, I do not see any issues. Both the blocks are 8 digit x vin models. Is there anything...

    1998 4.0 ohv motor rebuild

I have a 2000 Ford Ranger 4.0 that I would like to build a new motor for. Today I picked up a doner motor off a 1998 and I am going to get it mounted on a engine stand. During this planning stage, what upgrades should I be considering for power and longevity of my new motor. Any help would be...

Best sealant for water pump gasket?

Aviation sealant is all I've ever used with great success. When it comes time for component replacement, the gasket and sealer are easy to clean up and prep for reassembly.

    Shift Flair.....again....

I had the 2-3 flair for probably 5 years. Put many miles on it. Than the 1-2 flair. When the trany finally would not go any longer, it had 170,000 miles. Pulled the trany and ordered a master overhaul kit and new torque converter. The forward clutches were completely toasted. That was the only...

    2000 ranger 4.0 issues

Hello Moderator, RangerX, Yes, and I will share my results with this forum. I have read quite a few posts on these type of subjects, and the end result is never posted. I can clearly see from the stamp on my OE head gasket, that the factory used a Victor gasket on this built. Called a dealer in...

    2000 ranger 4.0 issues

Ordered the Promaxx heads this morning. Talking to the sales person on the phone he claimed new ownership for the past 3 years. Told me you would have to try very hard to crack these heads, they are reinforced in all the weak OE areas.

Just make sure when you reinstall the torque converter, that you have it completely seated in the transmission, before bolting up to the flywheel.

    2000 ranger 4.0 issues

Today I removed the upper manifold and the left valve cover. turned the crank until I had #5 cylinder at top dead center. The springs, pushrods, and everything appears normal looking. screwed in a test hose and applied pressure to #5 cylinder. All air pressure is shooting out the top of the...

    2000 ranger 4.0 issues

I've owned this truck since brand new and it had never been overheated. Don't tow with but haul occasional firewood. It's been going through some coolant, but been writing it off to a slow front cover leak. Than started going through cylinder #4 spark plugs every couple thousand miles. Now...

    Gear pattern.

I would back out about .003 and paint 4 teeth at 4 different locations around the ring gear, check again. Getting close.

    Gear pattern.

What are you measuring with? You can get a magnetic base and a depth indicator pretty cheap off eBay. What is the the backlash tolerance per the manual, or whatever you found online for the axle your working on? You are right about it being shallow, real shallow.

Who has sucessfully rebuilt there auto trans?

Hey Bob T, Right now I consider myself successful at rebuilding my 5r55e for my 2000 ford Ranger. This morning I buttoned up the reinstall under the vehicle, added fluid and fired it up. I kept on adding fluid while running in park, until it sucked in about 81/4 quarts . jumped in and shifted...

Well I guess I will have to wait alittle longer to finish up my project. My remanufactured valve body showed up on my porch with the shipping box busted open. Contents damaged. Going back.
