    Center Brake Light Ballast

I noticed that these are becoming difficult to find new. I just listed two used for sale on ebay, if anyone is interested (I no longer have a 2d gen). Drew. Ford Explorer 3rd Gen Center Brake Light Ballast (Quantity: 2) | eBay

Front lower ball joint part no. question

Can anyone illuminate why some manufactures use the same part no. for 3rd gen and 4th gen Explorer front lower ball joints, and some use separate part nos.? Per RockAuto, for example, Mevotech and AC Delco use the same part for these two models, whereas Ford, Moog, and others use different part...

    Front hub/axle question

My 2010 Explorer 4wd sounds like it needs a new driver's side hub/bearing. The front axle seal on that side has been leaking for a while, so I want to tackle that problem, too. The YouTube videos, etc., have you removing the knuckle in order to pull the CV shaft to replace the axle seal...

    Light for shift/gear indicator?

Can someone tell me, please, if there's supposed to be a light for the center-mounted shifter/gear indicator (its dark, and unsettling, and I've only had this truck for a few months, and don't remember if it was ever lit up). If so, any tips on replacing it? TIA, Drew.

Surprise fix for my dead '02 XLS

Last October I was driving to Chicago on I-94 for a conference when my 'sploder lost power and bogged down on a slight uphill near Kalamazoo. I pulled off the freeway. I looked under the hood, saw nothing amiss. The truck (4.0L) seemed to idle normally. I cautiously continued west on surface...

4.0 SOHC bogging @ cold acceleration

I have a 2010 4.0L V6 XLT that I bought used last fall @ 116k miles (now @ 125k) with a newer, professionally-rebuilt trans. For the first 3-5 minutes or so after startup, I get bogging on acceleration. What should I look at first? Dirty IAC valve? Dirty throttle plate? Thoughts? TIA.

    TPMS programming issue

Last fall, using eight rims that previously had no TPMS sensors (4 from an '02 Explorer and 4 new aftermarket), I had eight aftermarket (VDO?) TPMS sensors installed and four winter and four all season tires installed for the two complete sets of tires + rims. Costco programmed the TPMS on the...

    Offset and new wheels

I'm purchasing new wheels for my 2010 Explorer XLT--nice looking, darker grey ones to go with my dark grey late-build model. I have P235/70R16 tires, and plan to stick with them. New winter tires are going on the old rims (actually, old rims from a 2002 explorer, which raises a separate TPMS...

    Off to the 4th gen. forum for a while . . .

Well, my (mostly) trusty '02 Explorer 2wd 4.0L SOHC bit the dust last week, breaking down in Kalamazoo on a business trip to Chicago. The truck began bogging down accelerating up a slight hill @ 60-65 mph on I-94 and I pulled off. Truck idled fine in park; may have been a fuel delivery problem...

    Oil change intervals 4.0L SOHC

Ford changed its recommended oil & oil filter (normal use) service interval from 5,000 miles for 2007 and earlier model years to 7,500 miles in 2008 and later. Check the manuals online if you care to verify. I've overhauled two of the Cologne V6 4.0L engines (timing chains), each built in June...

    5R55S o/d light blinking light

Had the O/D light flash on my '02 XLS 4.0 for the first time on a 150 mile trip this weekend. Higher highway rpms confirm that the overdrive is not engaging at highway speeds (e.g., 3000 rpm @ 73 mph instead of 2200 rpms). Here's the background: 185k miles on the transmission (but see below)...

Another blinking o/d light issue (new)

Had the O/D light flash on my '02 XLS 4.0 for the first time onIv a 150 mile trip this weekend. Higher highway rpms confirm that the overdrive is not engaging at highway speeds (e.g., 3000 rpm @ 73 mph instead of 2200 rpms). Here's the background: 185k miles on the transmission (but see...

    Rich Bank 1 + Cylinders 1, 2, 3 misfires at startup

Can a clogged/bad Catalytic converter on the Bank 1 (passenger) side cause a rich bank one error (P0172)? If so, how does this happen? Thanks. Note: This is not one of the causes I've seen discussed on generic OBD code sites, e.g...

4.0 SOHC fuel injector o-ring question

RockAuto sells Mahle/Victor Reinz "original" o-rings for the 4.0 SOHC here: https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=2652790&cc=1377660&jsn=323&jsn=323&jsn=323 Question: the photo clearly seems to show different thicknesses for top and bottom o-rings. Other options (e.g., Fel-Pro "improved...

    temporary vibration--how identify?

On a fifty mile trip on the expressway last night, I heard/felt a new vibration. Very annoying. It almost felt like it was coming from the roof behind the drive seats (but it wasn't). It persisted for 20 miles or so, and seem to fluctuate (and even stop for a split second) going over bumps...

Bank 1 downstream O2 sensor question

I've got a code relating to Bank 1 too rich that keeps coming back despite multiple steps to correct. Question: In recording by OBD data, I noticed that through 10 frames that the rear (downstream) O2 sensor on bank one stays pegged at approx. 0.9 volts (exactly in most frames, from low of 0.89...

    verified capacity of fuel tank

Okay, the manual for my '02 Explorer XLS RWD days 22.5 gallon gas tank capacity. I recently got this back on the road (replaced engine) after several years' hiatus (look it up). I replaced the fuel filter but wanted to get all that old gas otta there. So I intentionally drove it to near empty...

    advice needed re. 5R55S parts swap . . .

I have two 2002 Ford Explorers built in June 2002--a 4wd XLT (doner vehicle, 116k miles) and rwd (restored XLS, 177k miles). I pulled the (good) engine from the doner truck, replaced all timing chains/cassettes/guides/tensioners; and am about to install in the 2wd XLS. Both vehicles have the...

    Quick blower question

Can anyone tell me whether the engine needs to be started in order for the front blower motor to come on? 2002 XLS with A/C and with manual (not auto) climate control. I know I need a new blower motor (ordered), but volt/ohmeter does not show any current to the blower harness with key in...
