Is your truck flaring while shifting? Mine lost over drive and flared 2 to 3rd. I ended up buying new servo's from Ford Lincoln Mercury Explorer Mountaineer Navigator Servo Bore Fix fixed it right up. Plenty of info here to search.
I would try tightening the O?D and Intermediate bands. You can search here for the instructions. You just need a 19mm wrench, a 5/16" socket and a torque wrench. They may be loose. Doesn't solve the issue, just buys time. I'm doing mine today so I don't know yet how simple it is. I bought...
I'm having the same codes on my 2003 XLS with 179k miles. Bought the truck at 165k so any work prior is unknown. I've done a ton of research but I'm no expert. Just trying to fix my problem so I can keep the truck.
I would suggest checking he O/D and Intermediate adjustment bands. Make...
Matt, Just some suggestions from a non mechanic. Check your fuel pump reset switch. Probably, not an issue but it may be intermittent. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDfcSAFri_Q
It may be a clogged fuel filter or injectors. Being that you ran all the gas out some debris may have gone with...
The A/C comes on with defrost. I would try unplugging the A/C unit, there is a little pigtail connection. Try running the defrost at that point and see if there is a drop in RPM. Your A/C system might be low which creates a bit more drag.
Any CEL? Do you have a OBDII scanner and Forscan that you could check for codes? I would check and clean the MAF sensor, IAC, EGR, etc. That's kind of the low hanging fruit. Without a view into the computer it's hard to tell.
I have the exact issue in my 2003 XLS. It appears the hose pulls way from the connector. It's a tight fit and heat might be shrinking the tube. I added on to the length. You can get a replacement bit of hose and another connector at NAPA.
Blue Driver does a lot for $99.

I used www.truecar.com to find my 2003 Explorer. It guarantees the price and was no hassles. Make sure it has a CarFax to give you an idea of its history. I would suggest only looking at Explorers or others that were used in the southern US. No salt and easier winter driving.
Check the wear on the pads. Most brake pads are designed to chirp when they wear down to the point they need to be replaced. It's the clip rubbing on the rotor. Replace both sides. If you have significant wear on one side and the other is fine you may need a caliper replacement. Most likely...
I had that issue with my wife's mercury. On inspection of the filter (Fram) the gasket was poorly seated. I replaced it with a better grade filter and not an issue.
There is also:
Clear the PCM adaptive memory
1) Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
2) Run a jumper wire from the positive battery cable to the now disconnected negative battery cable terminal. NOTE. Do this with the negative cable DISCONNECTED from the battery. The short circuit...
Firstly, I'm not a mechanic. I'm the guy that tries stuff then has it towed. But...
I would suggest you get a hold of an OBD2 code reader. You can get a wireless or bluetooth one for under $15. I use the Forscan.org software which is free for Windows. It allows you to read and reset many...
Do you have an OBD2 and forscan software. That has the ability to look at the PCM and clear. It doesn't reset the PATS but may shed some light. If unfamiliar forscan.org, it's free.
If you don't have already, get a ODB2 reader. I have a wireless ELM327 and the Forscan.org free software. It gives you fighting chance for finding a good one. It doesn't work on my Toyota though. :(

This video might be helpful. My son had the same on his Cadillac CTS and I couldn't find the answer. We tried reprogramming for hours. He towed it to our mechanic and they started it up in a couple of minutes. They didn't say how, just referenced...
I found this idea. I have not tried it personally.
1. Remove the ground cable from the battery post. Touch the ground cable to the positive battery post for 15 seconds and then leave the ground cable off the battery for a period of 15 minutes to allow the vehicle DTC codes and Theft codes...
Did you disconnect the fuel rail pressure sensor and not hook it up again? Here's a video of what it does http://repairpal.com/obd-ii-code-P0191
