Never Done, Build Thread for Kenne Bell Supercharged 5.0 Explorer with Ranger Edge Front Clip

Just letting you know that I gave up on the Tweecer for EEC-V. There is something missing in the patch code that makes the engine shut off periodically. I moved over to the Quarterhorse using CoreTuning’s REAC4 definition and Binary Editor. All good on the western front now.

Contemplating 5.0L rebuild for mild performance boost

Confirmed that the lockup is now working with the new strategy definition from CoreTuning. All of the datalogging works as well, so this is a major step up in functionality. Not a single hiccup or anything like that during the drive test either.

Contemplating 5.0L rebuild for mild performance boost

So I think that the Tweecer RT needs some work on the patch code because I've not been able to get the engine running without stalling occasionally or simply turning off while driving around town. A few times this has happened in some really undesirable situations, like heavy downtown traffic...

    Leaf spring pack upgrade

I hit up the local shop in Tucson that put together my leaves for my '79 Bronco. They were able to order 1250 lb leaves that are made in Mexico, should be here tomorrow or Monday. I also got a Wulf Suspension adjustable shackle kit which I already have installed and am impressed at how nice...

    5.0 Radiator interchange?

Not sure if the brand of the compressor matters here, but my first genuine Motorcraft compressor died after 25 miles of driving. Warranty replacement has been functioning well for several years now, though. Not sure if Four Seasons, Valeo or any other brands are higher quality or not, but...

    5.0 Radiator interchange?

It sounds like the lines themselves are fine, but if the compressor went south it's probably worth checking to make sure that the orifice tube isn't contaminated or clogged with debris from the compressor failing. I certainly had that situation and just replaced everything (compressor...

    5.0 Radiator interchange?

Whatever you do, make sure that the entire system is evacuated and you're able to pull a vacuum on it and maintain that vacuum level. Chemical reactions between the materials in the HVAC system will, in time, create non-condensable gases that can only be separated from the refrigerant using a...

Contemplating 5.0L rebuild for mild performance boost

You're on the right track with a closed loop control scalar. I believe it's RPMCTL. The stock value is set to 100 RPM and reducing this to 50 RPM allows tighter control of the idle with the IAC valve. I made this change and haven't experienced the RPM swing during extended idling after a few...

Contemplating 5.0L rebuild for mild performance boost

Ok, so the Mountaineer runs really good now. I retorqued the intake and exhaust headers, buttoned everything up and it's pretty turnkey at this stage. I do have some odd issues with idle, though. Once the truck has been idling in either neutral or drive for some period of time, it seems...

Contemplating 5.0L rebuild for mild performance boost

You might consider swapping in a stock Mustang HO roller cam... I believe it's quite conducive to blower applications and runs out to 6250 RPM without issue. In fact, I think I have one sitting on the shelf in my shop.

Contemplating 5.0L rebuild for mild performance boost

It's definitely getting there and by swapping in the Tweecer RT instead of the Quarterhorse with the READ0 definition from CoreTuning, it runs really good. A whole bunch of stuff wasn't working with the QH/READ0 thing, including converter lockup, spark timing and idle speed adjustments. Who...

Contemplating 5.0L rebuild for mild performance boost

Thanks, yeah, it was quite the breakthrough. I was able to run the vehicle hard to break it in. Still some tuning to be done, but now I need to retorque the headers and the intake manifold. Especially the intake because I can see something seeping out of the water jacket passages on the ends...

Contemplating 5.0L rebuild for mild performance boost

Ok, so this really is a Tweecer FTW situation. I got a reasonable tune going using the Quarterhorse on a junkyard EQE3/REAC4 box that my friend subsequently (accidentally) flashed to FLN0/READ0. The 1st indication that things were not right was the spark timing. The engine isn't able to...

That's with the stock downpipe (all 4 cats) and only a Magnaflow muffler upgrade!

Replaced door blend acuator still not working

Might be a silly question, but not only did you replace the actuator, but you also plugged the electrical connector back in, right? Should check the vacuum connection to the heater valve in the engine compartment as well.

Contemplating 5.0L rebuild for mild performance boost

The engine is definitely breaking in. Part throttle driving is somewhat fun after tuning the transient fueling because the acceleration is good and the sound of the engine is nice, only up to about 4000 RPM where I'm running it up to currently. With less than 200 miles on the engine, I don't...

Contemplating 5.0L rebuild for mild performance boost

So far... not done yet, but I did drive it into work this morning and thought it is running rather well.

Contemplating 5.0L rebuild for mild performance boost

Once you put a healthy cam into one of these machines, you're going to be retuning a lot more than a couple of tables. The fuel tables are actually fine as is, but the transient fueling is what's responsible for the enrichment in various conditions if you've pumped up the airflow in the engine...

Contemplating 5.0L rebuild for mild performance boost

Haha, yeah that would definitely be easier, but I think we're going to get through this. :chug:

Contemplating 5.0L rebuild for mild performance boost

I've been reading a fair bit on the EECTuning forum and what I've discovered is that there's this Failed MAF Table which is used not only for MAF failure in operation, but also to compute load and transient fueling during normal operation. I've adjusted mine and will see how it calculates load...

Contemplating 5.0L rebuild for mild performance boost

Ok, so tuning this thing is a bit of a nightmare. The induction and exhaust has been so significantly upgraded that the stock transient fuel tables absolutely do not suffice (runs totally lean on tip-in) and the engine load calculation by the EEC is completely off as well. I have a handle on...

Never Done, Build Thread for Kenne Bell Supercharged 5.0 Explorer with Ranger Edge Front Clip

I'm running a dual nozzle injection at the inlet on another engine using a Kenne Bell, but honestly I've not been able to measure a noticeable reduction in air charge temperature - I'm using H2O, though... not meth. I simply tuned for ACT based ignition timing reduction to keep things safe and...

Looks good! So those are dual 3" pipes all the way out? Independent mufflers as well?

Contemplating 5.0L rebuild for mild performance boost

Yeah, I was thinking of replacing the downpipes all the way back out with some new custom made plumbing for a different sound and more flow once I get this thing running correctly. Let’s see some pics of the exhaust work you mention, it’ll probably be useful to others for future project design.
