the 4wd kicks in automatically if computer sees a certain load requirement, such as passing, going up steep hills, start from dead stop, etc.... hence the 4x4 "auto" on the selector switch...

yes, mine's a '98 with the OHV (vin x) with auto 4wd... does have the 15" wheels... the only rust I've seen on it is where the cheap paint most of the automakers used, has chipped off on the roof and is only surface rust that I've seen so far... I'm in the middle of a conundrum at the moment...

I do have an open front diff (I had to replace the front unit last summer- luckily found the right gear ratio carrier on the second explorer) but my concern was that I was able to turn the front shaft with one wheel off the ground... I was thinking that it shouldn't have allowed the driveshaft...

final update on this, as I've gotten to the final step of the problem, and is now resolved... after getting the new wheel bearings,new cv's, new upper d/s ball joint/control arm, new rotors, new outer bearings/seals installed, the noise was still there... I took a week to decide what to do...

no news to update as of yet. I replaced the outer bearings, cv axles, and upper d/s control arm/ ball joint, and just as I was putting the wheels on, I noticed that I wiped out the wheel bearings trying to seat the cv's and upper c/a's. got 2 new hubs waiting to go in, and waiting on 2 new...

check your build dates on the vehicles, you may have a late build 96 that they may have raided the parts bins early... have seen this several times when I was turning wrenches...
