No Power to Ignition Module - The Reaper is Coming

Could be a fusible link. Is there one that only affects ignition? Everything else seems to be fine. I know the ignition relay is energizing. I can feel it when I connect the battery. I don't know where to look next. The wiring schematic is a little confusing to me. I hear the fuel pump prime...

No Power to Ignition Module - The Reaper is Coming

I will have the people come get the X if I can't get it to start. I hate to see it go with so many good parts and time in it. Today I replaced the ignition control relay because there was no power at terminal #8 of the ignition control module connector with the key "On". The manual says that...

Engine Control Module / EEC Relay Part #

Thanks, guys. I don't do salvage yards anymore, so I'll price the part from Ford and buy if it's not too much. Rock Auto has RY71 listed as an Ignition Relay. Hmm. I definitely didn't count 5 terminals. Will take a closer look at the relay later.

Engine Control Module / EEC Relay Part #

Will someone please provide a part #? I'd like to replace the brown, 4 term, EEC relay. Pep Boys ordered the wrong one and couldn't match mine. And I couldn't find it by name on Rock Auto.

No voltage at the ICM pin 8 with the key on so I pulled and am replacing the brown EEC relay tomorrow. If I still don't get voltage at the ICM connector, I've read it's probably the relay socket or ignition switch.

    Hard Starts

Still haven't resolved the hard start issue and it's gotten worse. It will crank, but not start. I checked today and there is no spark at the plug. And there is no voltage at the + terminal of the coil connector on the engine side. Next, the manual says to check the ICM for voltage and/or the...

An access panel is a great idea. Will definately consider that next time. This Explorer has lots of rust too, so another (useful) hole is a non-issue for me. I will keep working on it. At some point, I will find the issue.

Thanks Kiliona. My fuel pressure guage has been connected to the rail for about a week for monitoring. It almost always reads 40 psi a few seconds after the key is turned the first time and 30 psi while running. Seems low to me but the general operating range is 30 - 45 psi in the manual. Max is...

    Hard Starts

After starting the truck cold and hot a few times, I'd say it is almost back to normal. My son thinks it's ok. So I decided to skip the shop for now. Will replace the air filter and PCV valve, upgrade the wires and coil (hoping for a performance improvement), clean the MAF, and perform a...

Ok. I will take it for a ride and decide whether it's going to the shop this morning.

    Hard Starts

Let it run a while longer until the temp guage moved to the middle. Checked the resistance again and it read about 13.5k for each pair on the pack. From cold to warm it was 12.7, 14, and 13.5k. Not a large swing.

    Hard Starts

I just checked the secondary resistance again and it's 14k now. The truck ran for about 5 or 10 minutes in the garage. I know that's not long enough to get fully warm. It's starting faster now. Another symptom I noticed is that it sort of hangs for a second then resumes cranking. After it starts...

    Hard Starts

Yup. That's the same procedure Haynes provides. The primary range they give is close to what you have - .3 to 1 ohms. However, the secondary range is 6.5 to 11.5 k-ohms. That's a big difference from your range of 11 - 17 k-ohms. Now I'm confused. I just replaced the positive cable so that is...

    Hard Starts

Thanks for the recommendation. I saw parts 140035 and 140036 on Rock Auto yesterday and was tempted to order one of them. I wonder what the difference is between them. I have the Accel coil in my Amazon wish list $84; it will be deleted. :) The acceptable range in the spec is 6.5 k-ohm and...

    Hard Starts

Today I decided to check the ignition coil since I may have a weak spark. According to Haynes, the primary side is fine, but the secondary resistance is too high - 12.7 k-ohms. Max. is 11.5k. Since it's relatively cheap, I am replacing this now.

    Hard Starts

Stepped away from this for a minute. The earliest my shop can see the truck is Tuesday. Until then I will see what I can do. Last week I ran some BG44K injector cleaner through the tank. I also replaced the ECT and IAT sensors but it didn't help. Today I replaced the plugs because it was time...

    Hard Starts

On the plenum on the driver's side. Ok. I thought it might be on the air box somewhere near the MAF. You almost talked me out of reading the codes, but it may be helfpful for the MAF. I have a code reader for OBD-II and it is very useful. Yup, I planned to replace the IAT along with the...

    Hard Starts

Ok. I never learned how to read OBD-I codes. I read a thread here years ago and it sounds like a pain with the flashing lights. Thought I'd be rid of the Explorer by now so I didn't give it a second thought. It definately beats guessing and may have saved me time troubleshooting this problem...

Thanks. I feel like I'm all over the place with this. Should the sensor be cleaned or replaced. I've cleaned it before.

    Hard Starts

I don't think so. Got home today and had my son try to start the truck since it's 70 degrees out. It started on the second try! And it wasn't started/driven today. I had him try again and it started. Now I'm thinking it's temperature related since it's acting like an old carburated engine...

    Hard Starts

"Noticed you replaced the fuel filter so that is not it. I replaced mine recently when I ran the tank very low and the pickup sucked a bunch of crap into the filter. It would surge for a few seconds after starting. " I just read this and remembered that my son ran out of gas twice since the...

    Hard Starts

BKennedy you may be right. According to the link provided by 2stroke, I should see (much?) more than 10 volts at the battery while cranking. Yesterday, I read about 10.5 volts. And it does sound fine while cranking. Ok, I thought the solenoid/relay was an all or nothing situation. I will replace...

    Hard Starts

As far as the charging system, everything is stock. No amps or additional draw on the system. The battery was replaced one or two years ago. When I checked the battery before starting it was 12 or 13 volts. While the engine was running I remember seeing at least 15 or 16 volts. Whatever it was...

    Hard Starts

"Yes, it is a 175 amp fuse. Have you reset the fuel pump shutoff switch? " No. Could that cause hard starts? I would think it wouldn't start at all. Where is it? At this point, I feel like the replacement cable is the problem. It is a cheap universal part that was rerouted from the battery...
