Water pump failure leads to dead engine

Not being a mechanic I was a bit confused as to what the issue was with the water pumps and why they would cause such a catastrophic failure. Then I saw this... You can skip to about 8:25 if the link doesn't work correctly. That is where he starts taking off the timing cover. He explains the...

Ford ESP at dealer cost to forum members

If there were a company that did, I doubt I would trust them.

Ford ESP at dealer cost to forum members

I'm curious if anyone, that got the extended warranty, has gotten any acknowledgement from Ford? I got the e-docs from Joel but I was kinda expecting some formal documentation in the mail.

    5th Gen Explorer Photo Thread

I want to get the letter inserts and the black ford ovals. I have added mud flaps (splash guards?) since this was taken. I got a slew of vinyl samples in the mail last week. I was thinking about wrapping it in some color shift vinyl but they are all too much pink or purple.

Ford ESP at dealer cost to forum members

I got the same irritating pressure from the 'finance guy'. He was pushing it so hard and painting such a horror story of repair costs that I almost got up and walked out. Not only because he was being such a pain but because he was giving me some serious doubts as to the overall reliability. A...

Explorer Mudflap / Splash Guard Suggestions

I have the OEM ones on mine and they definitely help keep the mud and spray off the sides. Should work well with gravel.

How many miles does your 5th gen Explorer have?

2018 XLT bought new. Now it has about 4k miles. What is sad is the transmission already had to be replaced due to a leak.

Ford ESP at dealer cost to forum members

In fairness, I got mine from Joel. At the time it was a quick and painless process and the cheapest. Pricewise I think the other dealers have just dropped theirs to match and the 'at cost' thing may now be a standard. IMS, it was about $500 cheaper than my local dealer for a high mileage, cover...

    Time for tires

I don't know. I'll take a stable but short treadwear over blow-outs any day. I recently was up against the same decision. I didn't like what was offered by Goodyear, BFG or Cooper so went with Pirelli's. So far, so good. Much better grip and handling than the stock Hankooks.

    5w-30 oil in a 3.5 NA Engine

Yeah, sorry. That was me getting lazy. I meant 5w-30. When he said it I thought he might have been blowing smoke. Running 5w20 seems alien to me so I wasn't sure enough to try to refute him. I ran 10w40 in every car up until about 2003. Everyone I knew ran 10w40 with some even doing 10w50. I...

    5w-30 oil in a 3.5 NA Engine

I have heard stories (grain of salt there) that 30w will 'blow the seals'. I don't know if that is true or not just putting it out there. Seems like it was a dealer service dept that told me that... It was in reference to a 2006 F-150 though. I would tend to run 5w-30 in Texas due to the heat...

    Am I Screwed?!

Is it a standard transmission? I had a '06 F150 that had a rattle like sound that came from near the clutch. I found it was fairly normal. Never caused me any problem.

Has anyone managed to actually fix the heated seats?

Wow, they have a fan. I figured they were just pads.

    24 inch rims

You might want to check on the load rating for those Lexani wheels. I was looking at some 20" and all the ones I checked were 1350 - 1400lbs. As they don't (or didn't) post on the web what their load ratings are, I had to email their reps. FYI.

    Time for tires

Good luck. I was looking for Eagle's for mine but I couldn't find them in that size. GY did not show making them in 255/50/R20. I ended up going to Pirelli's. As to recommendation, I would recommend NOT buying anything Firestone or related. I had 3 blowouts of Firestone tires over the years...

2018 Explorer XLT - Navigation issue

I hate the voice stuff as it hates me too. The aftermarket heads can use a bypass switch to make it think it is in park. I wonder if such a switch could be refitted into the wiring harness for the Sync?

    Setting up an in-car LAN?

Hmmm, interesting question. At some point there would need to be some type of server running to fulfill the request. I don't think there is a ford approved app for that. The last time I checked was about a year ago and there only a handful of useless (to me) apps. I don't remember seeing a...

    Hot Spot Question

I wondered about this too. I'm pretty sure you would have to change the SIM but no clue as to where that would be or if it would accept another. FWIW, they have hotspot OBDII dongles that you can buy for $80-$250 but you still need a data plan with them.

    Tesla Style Headunit

Thanks for the confirmation. I just got an email from Phoenix stating the 4G modem does not work after the replacement. They didn't clarify if it is part of the radio that is replaced or if it is just not supported.

I was thinking about changing the display to one of the large displays by phoenix tech? I am curious if the onboard 4G cellular modem still works or is part of the parts removed in the exchange. Anyone know?
