Does anyone know how the 5-spd shift lever comes apart?

Do any of you guys know how the gearshift lever on the 5-speed comes apart? This is for a '91. The bezel on top of the lever with the gear pattern written on has come loose and it is vibrating with a loud buzzing sound when the truck is in motion and is absolutely driving me up the wall. I...

    Help Please!!!!

Glad you got it fixed! Woohoo! So in the spirit of improvement, and to capture this for posterity, the question arises: How many of those parts that you replaced were really necessary, e.g. the coil? Do you suppose if you took the truck to Ford and paid them $80-plus for a diagnosis that...

    Help Please!!!!

Are you still having the rich cold-starting problem? You said 'it runs very good but is still not right'. My Ex does the same thing when closing the throttle; when coming up to a stop, I push in the clutch and the engine doesn't slow down to idle untll I've been sitting there about 2-3...

    Help Please!!!!

OK, looks like you tried the IAC so ignore my other post. There is an air charge temp sensor in the lid of the air box but, I am thinking, if it was no good then wouldn't you get a code? You can take it to a muffler shop and have them do a pressure drop test across the cat to see if it is...

    Bad FPR - White Smoke

Yeah - another thing to try is to clean the IAC (Idle Air Control, a/k/a Idle Air Bypass valve). It is the silver cylindrical thing mounted on the side of the upper manifold with a wire going to it. Disconnect the wiring connector, remove the valve from the upper manifold(don't lose the gasket...

    Bad FPR - White Smoke

Lonestar you should go ahead and change your oil anyway. Cheap insurance. It takes very little contamination in the oil to ruin the capacity of the oil to make a lubricating film. The truth is, you don't know how much gas got into the crankcase.

    Bad FPR - White Smoke

Bronco Bill you need to replace your FPR - it is going south on you. My Ex did exactly the same thing you're describing. Other symptoms were poor gas mileage and surging/hesitation/cutting out at freeway speeds. The yahoos at the Ford stealer couldn't diagnose it so they wanted to charge me...

    Bad FPR - White Smoke

I had the same thing happen when I did the FPR in my '88 Bronco II. When the old FPR went bad it allowed the entire crankcase and all six cylinders to fill with gasoline to the point where the motor hydraulic-locked. So I drained the oil, blew the gas out of the cylinders, and changed the FPR...

'91 XLT won't pass smog - where do I start looking?

'91 XLT, 185,000 miles. Won't pass smog and the People's Republik of Kalifornia pasted me as a 'gross polluter' (sheesh...). The truck has brand new plugs (Motorcraft platinum) and plug wires, new filters, I cleaned the MAF, new fuel pressure regulator, etc. Runs great and gets about 17.5...

    High milage explorers?

"I would agree with you if all this happened while under warranty but it did not. The expensive stuff happened after it expired and in case anyone is thinking of an extended warranty, it was beyond that too." By law, as far as I know, the Lemon Laws are not bound by warranty. Were I you, I...

    High milage explorers?

Not sure where you live but I'm pretty sure you qualify for the Lemon Law. Most states have lemon laws nowadays. Check with the Dept of Consumer Affairs or some such in your state and you should be able to find the lemon law rules. I am truly sorry for all your trouble. Unfortunately we...

Old head stolen, installed a new head, now no sound - what th'?!?!?

Oh yeah - Are you sure about these: - White/Red Rear Right Possitive - Brown Rear Right Neagitive - Blue/Black Rear Left Possitive - Yellow Rear Left Neagitive I think you might have the polarity backwards on these two speakers. I think the solid wire is positive but I'm not sure. The...

Old head stolen, installed a new head, now no sound - what th'?!?!?

Well I looked it over and sure enough I had not hooked up the blue wire. The wire is even marked "Amp Remote"! Duh! So I hooked it up and it works perfectly. Thanks for taking the trouble to go out to your truck and look that up for me - I appeciate it! Pete

Kustom Toyz thanks very much for your reply. I will try your idea tonight. WHat about the other blue wire? Is that the actual amp-turn on wire? Thanks again for your help!

How is Ford Parts Network to do business with?

Guys I need to order some parts. Fordpartsonline.com (Atascadero Ford) has declined severely as of late. I guess they let go three staff and they will not do business over the phone any more. When I send in a parts request using the web form, I get an automated email reply that basically...

    New HU doesn't work! Help!

Installed new Sony HU to replace old Sony HU with dead CD. Installed new HU, powered it up, but no sound at all. No pop, no buzz, no nuthin. Truck has factory premium sound w/factory sub. That should not be a problem though since the previous Sony worked great until the CD player died...

    Headunit Install.....HELP!

OK forget the term 'signal' - how about 'complex waveform' instead :) . The fact remains that the 'stuff' coming out the new HU output terminals is still not fundamentally any different than the 'stuff' that came out of the factory HU, so the factory amp should accept it with no problem. I...

    Headunit Install.....HELP!

Dumb question: why would he need an amp bypass at all? The factory amp is made to work with a factory HU. The factory HU makes speaker-level signal output that goes to the factory amp. The factory amp is looking for a speaker-level input, not a line-level input (unless I'm wrong). The new...

Old head stolen, installed a new head, now no sound - what th'?!?!?

Ok here's what happened. So my head unit was stolen. It was a Sony FM CD 25Wx4 blah blah blah. I got another head unit, similar to the old one only with more power, installed it, spliced it all in good and proper, power it up and - there is no sound. Nothing. No hum, no pop, no nuthin...

When is a plug wire no good, and when is it OK?

Guys here's a question for you. The truck is at the local stealer for diagnostic and he is telling me my plug wires are no good. They have about 40k on them and they are good quality aftermarket wires. My question: If a wire meets the resistance spec, and there are no breaks in the...
