My 95 XLT keypad did light up before it crapped out. I replaced it with a brand new aftermarket one I bought on Ebay. The new replacement also lights up. Been working fine and still looks good after 3 years.

Have you tried plugging both the old and new cigarette lighters into the auxiliary socket mounted on the passenger side near the floor? If they work, then as member Runnin'OnEmpty suggested, change the socket mounted in the dash.
