    Transmission Swap

If you put something higher than a 3.55 you will do better on the flat, windless highway but the 4.0 doesn't have enough power and bogs down and downshifts a lot in any hills, can't handle a headwind and acceleration is terrible. I have a 3.55 with oversize tires which gives it a higher final...

Getting rear diff rebuilt, but told entire driveline should be rebuilt too

My bad, I stand corrected. I have heard that the seal where the driveshaft goes into the rear diff is a bad design. It was redesigned a few times for the later model years but apparently that didn't make it any better. I can see the seal leaking on mine, has since I got it.

2004 ltd tranny, 120k, shop says it needs to be rebuilt

You will likely get lots of different answers here. I change mine every 20-30k depending on how they've been driven. Just remember, when you drain and fill you only change out half or less of the fluid. I would change it more often at first so you get the old fluid out then find a good...

2004 ltd tranny, 120k, shop says it needs to be rebuilt

What he said! make sure its a drain and fill with filter change, not a flush. While the drain and fill vs full flush is a often debated topic, it seems if you flush most trannys with that kind of mileage that have never seen service your asking for failure soon. Also may be worth posting...

Getting rear diff rebuilt, but told entire driveline should be rebuilt too

I would do exactly that. Don't flush it, just change the fliud and filter and call it good. I would change the fluid every 10k for the next 30k so you can slowly get new fluid in there. Many people have over 200k on their original tranny (mine included), theres no telling how long these will...

Getting rear diff rebuilt, but told entire driveline should be rebuilt too

How bad is everything acting up? is the diff humming or grinding ect like one of the previous posters said? In mine I bought it with 87k on it and the diff hummed first time I drove it, was louder than the road and wind noise but not terrible. Attempted the rebuild near 100k and after...

    33's on a 4.0 explorer

. It'll be slower and the biggest difference is it won't hold od on hills much. Gas mileage will be the biggest hit- maybe 2 mpg less. Mine went down about 1 mpg when I upgraded to a smaller tire than your running but it was unchanged/better on a flat highway road. hills kill these...

How to get Better Gas Mileage?

Gotta keep some motion sickness bags close by too! What the others said. I went from low resistance tires to oversized at's and only lost 1 mpg, which I gained back buy opening up the exhaust and a janky CAI. Didn't notice a change with synthetics in summer, certainely helped in the...

    Don't buy 3rd Gen with 4.0L

Not disagreeing with this, the location is bad. However, its not just a Ford thing. My parents crv and my friends ridgeline both had the timing parts replaced before 140k. I'll gladly take my completley trouble free 200k over that. That includes forgetting to add oil and running it for >1...

    Moog Complete Struts

this reply may be useless but I put moog on my impala. They are good so far except the front is 1.5 inches higher than stock so it looks stupid but seem to be quality. only 10k on them though so kinda early to tell. I put reybestos on my explorer, i believe they were sourced from...

    Front and rear differential covers

I agree. Broke 1 bolt on my front diff and just left it, put 60k on it since with no issues. It sucks cause they gave us 1 inch of space to work with but it should come off without taking anything else off.... Rear diff sucks. Can you just drain and fill it or are you too far into it?

AWD vs 4wd V8 Explorer.. Whats better and more reliable

awd is all most people need. 4wd is good for off roading, towing cars out of the ditch, towing things you shouldn't etc. if you need better traction on the road awd is all you need and is easier to use since you just drive and let the car do the work, no buttons and stuff to decide which one...

    cut my losses?

x2. And your only loosing 3 mpg, maybe 4 at most. And 08 or 09 ( I think it was 09) came with a 6 speed that will make the gap in mileage even less.

    2002 ExplorerXLT 4x4 Dead...

I had similar problems and replaced the 4x4 cm box thing. it still didnt work so i checked the transfer case and found a ground that was disconnected. fixed that and it has worked ever since. I would start there, very common problem for early explorers

    Question

+1 for 460ford.com. very good resource. My limited knowledge is they are sturdy engines and can make good power relatively cheaply and easily. if you get a big block you have to get a nice exhaust setup! no better sound!

My 2000 xlt survived the gauntlet

this is old but im impressed your tranny never got much above 200. is it the stock system or do you have a aftermarket setup to keep it cool? did your coolant get warm at all?

Front end clunk but only in Auto 4x4

Good to hear! a easier way than pulling the fuses is to go under the dash on the passenger side and find the black box that says 4x4cm or something like that, it has 2 sets of wiring harnesses going into it from the bottom. you can just unplug one and its the same as pulling the fuses i...

2004 Explorer: major repairs or trade it in

I wouldn't repair it either. I changed mine for the first time at 87k as it hummed loudly when I bought it from the first owner. Has hummed ever since, sometimes quietly, sometimes rather loudly, so I just change the fluid every year (about 20k). this includes off roading, towing and constant...

    spray on bedliner

I don't have any pics but have a friend who did this and plasti dipped his bumpers. it looks like a xls from a distance but within 20 feet you can tell he used bedliner and it looks good up close. he lives in the Mojave desert now and said after a few years in the sun there he has to redo it...

Transmission fluid flush vs drain and refill.

What they said above. And wipe off and reuse the nice metal gasket! I tossed mine cause the filter came with a rubber one and it took 2 of us over a hour to line up all the holes. On the next flush threw that one away and replaced with a oem metal gasket and took less than 10 min.

    '02 4x4 EB 4.0L advice

This is tough. I have debated what I will do when this happens to mine as my situation (except the repairs) is similar. I finally decided to buy something else before my tranny goes out. Not sure on the price to fix everything, but I would guess your trans is shot which is usually a minimum...

    Towing Brakes??

Not sure where to start... that S10 Blazer and the Burban.... wow. The 4.3 is stout but that Blazer had to be all over the road. How much wood would you say that was? 1.5 cords? Any estimate on weight, especially tounge weight? I'm trying to get an accurate picture of how much wood my...

    Don't buy 3rd Gen with 4.0L

this reply is similar to what I posted a little bit ago in the modified forum- From what I have read the timing issues in the V6 were mostly pre 2002, this is the first I have heard of it except for rare occasions. I'm not refuting your evidence as its pretty clear with the pics but I'm...

    Vehicle specs

Sounds like you are ok. I strongly recommend a transmission temperature gauge. I have towed a similar amount of weight with much less wind resistance and the tranny stayed cool most of the time but with the torque converter unlocked in 4th gear it heats up pretty fast. These tranny's are...
