93' Explorer Starter Problems - Machine Gun Noises

That's the universal sign of a dead battery. You turn the key, the solenoid engages, which pushes the starter out to engage the flywheel. That's the click that you hear. As soon as it is engaged, the solenoid contacts close, connecting the starter to the battery. The battery doesn't have enough...

2003 Limited - which radio do I have??

Ah damn, I should have thought of that! Classic problem.

    Steering wheel buttons acting up

I have an 03 Limited with all the buttons on the steering wheel - cruise, audio control, climate control. The cruise and audio buttons have never had any problems, but the climate control buttons have been acting up for years. At first, the lower temp button would work only intermittently...

Auxillary input on 03 Limited Radio

I've had a Soundgate Aux input module in my 03 Limited for years, to work with my satellite radio. It's always worked great.

Ticking noise 4.6L V8, all RPM

Called my insurance company and had it taken home on the back of a flatbed (for free! I knew I was paying those premiums for SOMETHING). I bought a kit from NAPA this afternoon, and I'll pop it in there this weekend...along with checking all my other plugs as well!

Ticking noise 4.6L V8, all RPM

Well....I figured out what the ticking noise was this morning. As I was driving into work, the #3 spark plug blew out of the engine. My truck is parked outside, I looked at it quickly to see that it had in fact blown the plug out. The coil looks intact, which is good news. The bad news is...

Ticking noise 4.6L V8, all RPM

My 2003 Limited developed a ticking noise recently. It's at all engine speeds from idle to highway, it's there regardless of engine temperature, when it's dead cold or when the engine is hot. The frequency of the ticking is exactly 1/2 the engine RPM, so that pointed me toward fuel injectors or...

How To: Replacing Upper Ball Joints on a 3rd Gen 4x4 [Pictures]

Mine was bound in there so tight, that when I did use an extraction tool with an impact wrench, it ended up destroying the control arm in the process, so I had to replace it anyway. Part of that was due to corrosion, but it did still destroy it. If you do take the control arm off, make sure you...

Is this the blend door actuator?

Never found the source of it, and it still happens. I replaced both blend door actuators (and that was a HELL of a lot of work). It made no difference at all. Still makes the creaky noise, still get lukewarm air out of the driver's side vents, winter and summer.

How to: Replace Front Blend Door Actuator in 3rd Gen Ex.

Well I tore into my 2003 Limited this past weekend. I ordered two Dorman 604-207 blend door actuators from Rock Auto, which were apparently direct replacements for the actuators in my truck. The Dorman units looked almost identical, with the same shafts, electrical sockets, screw holes and...

Is this the blend door actuator?

Thanks so much. I know exactly what you're talking about, as I scanned the 1000+ page service manual for my motorcycle the same way, so that I could have an electronic copy with me in my phone on the road in case I ever needed it. I don't want to ever do that again! :)

Is this the blend door actuator?

Thanks ExProblems. I actually found those threads before as well (I did search for and read through a LOT of threads before I posted). The first one had pictures at one time, but no longer, unfortunately. The second one I already tried (the DTC check) as I mentioned in my original message...

Is this the blend door actuator?

I agree, sounds like something binding - but with no documentation or idea where the blend door is in a climate control system, or how to get to it, I'm reluctant to start tearing things apart. I know there are two blend doors, one each for driver and passeneger.

How to: Replace Front Blend Door Actuator in 3rd Gen Ex.

I have a 2003 Limited with dual zone electronic climate control. For a couple years now, in the winter, this has been happening: The truck has been driven and is warm, blowing hot air. It is then parked until it is cold-soaked (i.e. overnight). When the truck is started, the heating system...

Is this the blend door actuator?

Nobody? Nobody has had this problem, or has an idea what might be causing it? Out of all the electronic climate control Explorers, I can't believe I'm the only one who has had this problem and figured out the fix.

    Have a 4.6L? Here's a problem I bet you all have...

I've been watching mine ever since I first saw this topic. This weekend I checked mine again while changing the oil, and discovered that the plastic loom had been worn through - no damage to wires though. I pulled the plastic funnel piece out, and cut a piece away so that it's nowhere near...

Is this the blend door actuator?

Just a bit more information: I ran the DTC self-diagnostics as described in this post. It did not show any errors. It did however, actuate both the passenger and driver's blend doors - I could distinctly hear both of them actuating. I recorded the sound they made, which is better than me just...

How To: Replacing Upper Ball Joints on a 3rd Gen 4x4 [Pictures]

I replaced all of the ball joints on my 2003 Limited this past week, as three of the four had failed. I bought four Moog ball joints from Rock Auto: two K8695T (lower) and two K80008 (upper), both with grease nipples. I started by removing the wheel, then unbolting and removing the brake...

Fixed my reverse parking sensor system

At night your lights are on. It could be a bad ground. If you turn your lights off, does it still happen?

it's my birthday and my present from my explorer is....

Swap the suspect coil pack with one of the other coil packs, say from #2. If the misfire moves to #2, then you know the coil pack is the culprit. I had the exact same symptoms last year, and it turned out to be a failed injector. I did the same thing - swapped two injectors around, and the...

    2004 Explorer Blinker issue

I had the exact same problem on my 2003. I thought it was the flasher relay, but after replacing it, it didn't solve the problem. The problem ended up being a faulty multifunction switch. Replacing it fixed the problem.

Front left clunk on turning and bump

A couple of days ago I noticed my 03 Limited (4.6L) has developed a clunk. When turning a corner (i.e. steering wheel rotated at least 3/4 of the way around), and hitting a bump of any kind, I get a loud CLUNK from my left front wheel. I'm not feeling anything through the steering wheel when the...

    Have a 4.6L? Here's a problem I bet you all have...

Just had a look at mine. It's worn through the spiral wrap, but the wires are still intact. I'll beef it up next oil change. Thanks for posting this.
