Brake Light works when wanting to, any suggestions?

Same problem here. I checked and it was indeed my multifunction switch. Which is also the turn signal switch, for those that don't instantly know what the multifunction switch is on this vehicle.

I just experienced the same problem with one brake light not working. Thanks to this thread, I quickly determined it was my multifunction (turn signal) switch. Thanks guys.

    Spark Plug melted?????

Autolite Platinum AP765 Melt-Down Photos Here's two photos of the Autolite Spark Plug that melted down in my 1994 Explorer XLT. It's plug AP765. Stamped on the side of this plug is MADE IN U.S.A. - 08 A while after this plug melted down, another one of these plugs cracked the ceramic...

    Spark Plug melted?????

I know I'm late to reply, but I had the same thing happen with an Autolite Platinum Plug on my '94 Explorer on a newly rebuilt engine. The wire end that sits over the electrode entirely melted away. The plug got so hot the spark plug boot welded itself to the ceramic insulator on the spark...

How to: 2002 Explorer rear wheel bearing replacement (pictures)

I'd crank down on that hub puller and then rap a tap tap with a hammer on the end of the hub puller bolt in the effort to allow the vibrations to break the corrosion bond that's holding the axle shaft tight. That'll usually break'em free unless somebody welded the axle in there (kidding on the...

How to: 2002 Explorer rear wheel bearing replacement (pictures)

Yeah, my 3/4 inch socket set wouldn't reach over the end of the axle shaft either. I almost took the grinder to it - same as you. But when I was at O'Reilly's I saw that they had a socket in their tool loan program that would work, so I picked that up, in addition to their hub puller tool. I...

How to: 2002 Explorer rear wheel bearing replacement (pictures)

Well I replaced the emergency/parking brake shoes with the hub installed and it really wasn't too bad of a job. I used an awl that came with a Sears Craftsman screwdriver set, and a pick with a curved end as described by Pontisteve. A little bit of fussing was required but it wasn't too bad at...

How to: 2002 Explorer rear wheel bearing replacement (pictures)

I agree that the replacement of the hub is completely unnecessary, unless it's been damaged. Which is why I only purchased a new bearing. As far as the order of pressing the new wheel bearing into the housing and onto the spindle/hub? Here's how I did it: First, use the outer race from the...

How to: 2002 Explorer rear wheel bearing replacement (pictures)

I didn't replace any seal at that location on mine. It looked like there probably was a seal there originally, but I didn't even look for any replacement seal. I saw a piece of steel shell pressed over the abutting face next to the bearing on the hub, but no seal left attached to this piece of...

How to: 2002 Explorer rear wheel bearing replacement (pictures)

I decided that I wouldn't shove the hub back out of the bearing to replace the parking brake shoes after posting above because I realized there isn't any way to keep the press load only the two inner bearing race halves during that process. And I don't want to risk damaging the wheel bearing by...

How to: 2002 Explorer rear wheel bearing replacement (pictures)

I pressed the driver's side rear wheel bearing out and back in without any problems on my 2002 XLT, but I have a 30-ton shop press. I purchased this press at a garage sale this past summer and this is the first time I've ever used a press for anything. So I was going slow and easy, and I made...

A Primer on Code Readers and Scanners

Bill, Which Brand/Model Scantool did you purchase for your 94 Explr? I rebuilt my 94 tranny a couple years ago using the Glacier991 info plus the Frankentranny thread information. I actually ended up rebuilding mine to the Frankentranny. Working well to date. Thanks for posting. Paul

A4LD to Frankentranny Rebuild - Glacier Questions?

Glacier991, If you know someone with a large lathe, turn down the back mating surface on the center support the required amount. I think I had to remove about 0.023" to bring the clearance from the back of the case to the center support face into specification.

Another A4LD bites the dust, have reverse, no drive gears

My guess is rebuild time. You could pull the valve body and see if there's obvious problems there. That black fluid color is the worn & burned frictions from the clutch packs. You might get it running without a rebuild, but I suspect it could use a rebuild just from the fluid condition and...

A4LD to Frankentranny Rebuild - Glacier Questions?

The Frankentranny Lives Again An update on my A4LD to 5R55E frankentranny conversion. My frankentranny is completed, alive, and it purrs like a kitten. No problems so far. The one problem I experienced with my A4LD to 5R55E conversion was a lack of any clearance in the back half of the...

A4LD to Frankentranny Rebuild - Glacier Questions?

Glacier991 or anyone else familiar with the Frankentranny, I'm doing the A4LD Frankentranny conversion as covered by Brain in this forum. I have two questions: 1) Low Sprag Inner Race: Should I reinstall the original A4LD low sprag inner race after removing it to remove the thrust...

    A4LD Lockup Chugging - Help?

Update While I had the tranny out of the vehicle, I figured with my luck I had better tear into it and make sure there wasn't something wrong inside the guts of it. So I pulled the bell housing and pump, and when I pulled the overdrive band I could see some significant scoring on the band and...

    A4LD Lockup Chugging - Help?

BB, I have a partial update. I took MrShorty's advice and connected my digital VOM between on the ground wire for the TCC lockup solenoid at the PCM and a +12volt wire from the glove box near the PCM. Then I went for a drive and watched to see if I was receiving a steady voltage when the...

    A4LD Lockup Chugging - Help?

BB, Thanks for that post showing the Sonnax Anti-Shudder Spring. I now see that I was wrong on the location of this spring. It doesn't go behind the converter clutch shuttle valve in the TCC solenoid bore... it's supposed to be installed behind the converter clutch shift valve in the 3-4...

    A4LD Lockup Chugging - Help?

OK, thanks Glacier991 and the others who have assisted. I called up Transgo technical assistance yesterday and asked a man there about their instructions on their Tips sheet. Never really did get an answer on that matter because he was more interested in troubleshooting my tranny shudder than...

    A4LD slips when cold

Yes, the valve body on your 1990 A4LD can be removed and rebuilt without pulling the tranny off the vehicle. It's accessible after removing the tranny pan. Glacier991 has some excellent threads posted describing exactly how to rebuild the A4LD valve body.

    A4LD Lockup Chugging - Help?

I checked out the wiring harness for an open circuit in the process of diagnosing the initial bad TCC lockup solenoid from the pin on the PCM all the way down to the solenoid wire harness plug at the transmission. The OBDI code reader had identified an open circuit on the TCC lockup solenoid...

Solved Transmission Band Adjustment Specification Chart

A4LD Overdrive Band Adjustment in 4.0L Application I've read in this thread and others for the A4LD that after tightening the overdrive band to 10 ft-lbs, the correct adjustment is back off the adjustment screw by 2 turns and then tighten the locknut. I have a 1994 Explorer 4.0L with an A4LD...

    A4LD Lockup Chugging - Help?

I have an update. I pulled the tranny pan and valve body and replaced the TCC Lockup solenoid with the OEM style two-hole solenoid and the transmission still shudders in TCC Lockup. All other gears (R, 1, 2, 3, Overdrive) and shifting seem to be fine. I've replaced the two servos...
