    Years and gear ratio question.

Did the 1991-1994 Ford explorer, or the ford ranger with the dana 35 come equiped with 4.10 gears as a stock option. I've picked up a rear out of a 96 with 4.10s, but all of the junkyards say they can find 4.10 in the dana 28. thanks. Dube

    always changing plugs grrrrr!

Make sure you are using good quality DOUBLE platnium pluge, motorcraft or autolite brands. they are expensive, but last about 100k give or take. should take care of your problems. All other plugs are poo in the soch, or any ford motor for that motor. Hope this helps. Dube

    Best gasket sealer ?

For those items, the best gasket is just to use the appropriate gaskets for those pieces. gasket sealer, eg silicone, really sucks......old school. Clean the pieces absolutely spotless, apply the gasket as directed...no more problems. Hope this helps. Dube

    Knocking on acceleration??

Hey guys, the (knocking, pinging, rattling, etc), while under acceleration is what is known as preignition, or in layman's terms, the combustion is occuring too rapidly. This is most commonly caused by....de te deeeee....low octane fuel. I'd bet doughnuts to dog treats, that most of you...

    rear end noise

You either have bad pinion bearings (inner or outer), bad side carrier bearings, or bad axle bearings. I would guess pinion bearings. It is a job that is best left up to an adept mechanic who is used to setting up ring and pinion. You could do much damage if you set it up incorrenctly. I do...

    Front End Noise!

I'm sure your problem is your front sway bar bushings. The problem is so common, that ford has had a recall on them. Replace your two bushings on the bar with new ones from ford, and replace your endlinks with polyurethane after market ones. This will take care of your problem. -Dube

    replacing the seats?

Tim, Changing cloth to leather seats is a piece of cake. Any leather seats from a 93 up fit your explorer. They should not be a lot of money in a junkyard because interiors are not a popular item. I bought front and rear leather seats, with the power bases for two hundred bucks. There is...

Ford Passed Up Chance to Boost Explorer's Stability

Lets put things in a little bit of perspective. Approximately 1100 people have died from "top heavy" explorers' roll overs since they have been introduced over ten years ago. Alright. Approximately 100 people die each year from choking on ball point pens (not counting pencils, crayons...

    Futura tires....

Tigger, It has been my experience that these tire are both poor performers both on road and off, they are weak, and have poor traction, especially in rain, snow, and dirt. (Here in Maine, I see a lot of it all.) Sell these tires for $150 for the set and buy a set of Pirelli Scorpian AT's...

    Help..Diagnose a Push Button 4x4 problem!

Rod, Before I fork over the cash for a new engaging switch, try one from a friends truck, or if not, make sure you can return the one from the dealer should this not be the problem. As for the hubs, its been my experience that the automatic hubs are either good or their bad. When they are...

    Help..Diagnose a Push Button 4x4 problem!

First thing to do is remove the electric transfer case engaging motor. Place the truck in neutral and with a pair of pliers move the transfer case selector to low range, to make sure the transfer is capable of low range. If it goes into low range, your problem is in the motor, if not it is in...

    Rear Disc Brake Conversions?

Is there anyone who makes a complete rear disc brake conversion kit for the 91-94 explorer rear axle, or would I be better off just buying a whole axle from a 95 up explorer for $400? Thanks. -Dube

A question to well modified Explorer owners?

I have a 94 explorer two door 4x4. My projected tire size is 33 x 10.50x 15", I have 31's now. On lifting: Which company offers a good flexible suspension for fitment of 33 while remaining a decent ride (50/50street and trail)? I'm especially looking for one with extended radius arms...

Instead of a spring over conversion.......

Why can't someone use the rear 8.8 axles out of a ford ranger? The spring width and perch placement look about the same. Would this work or would the spring perches not line up with the explorer springs?

    Ah! Vibrations.

brendan, To fix the clunking sound in your front end, replace all of the sway bar bushings, the two where the sway bar attatches to the frame, and the two on the ends where they attatch to the lower a-arms. The a-arms ones comes usually as a kit of two from napa or the like, the two on the...

Will 33's fit with a 3" body lift?

Does anyone know who is "the man" to speak to about gearing sizes? I'm on the stock 3.55 gears on the 31's, on a tired engine (180k). I put on about 40k a year, I offroad about 50 days a year, and I tow close to 4000 pounds fairly frequently. Which gear selection would be preferable for good...
