Need help with popping sound and shaking coming from engine

Not to worry. Every single one of us has done something as or more embarrasing than that. If they say they haven't, they're either lying or have never done any type of repair/maintenance work. ;)

Old head stolen, installed a new head, now no sound - what th'?!?!?

Almost 9 years old, yet this is the thread that solved my problem. Exact same problem. Everything seemed to be working fine, but no sound at all. Damn blue wire. Phhtttt!

Just "inherited" 94 Ford Explorer is a mess

X10 Everyone wants a good looking ride. The key that last sentence was..."ride". Even the sharpest looking Explorer is useless if it's DOD (Dead On the Driveway). Explorers are amoung the most durable and dependable vehicles on the road. But, maintenance and repairs always come before...

    Why trash talk 2WD exp?

I dunno. I just don't see the point of a 2wd Explorer, but I'm not prepared to say that they "suck". Part of the reason that I bought my Explorer was for it's reputation of rugged dependability and the 4wd. I don't use it for wheelin', but it's nice to have when you need that little extra umph...

    "BAD" factory radio

I have a Ford factory AM/FM radio, single slot CD player, in my 94 Explorer. It suddenly stopped working and displayed the word "BAD" on the display. I pulled it out and it seemed a little warm. After putting it back in it seemed to have reset itself and started working again. Then, it did it...

    huge motor bogging problem!

It kind of sounds as though your fuel pump may be picking up some debris in the tank. When you shut it off for a few seconds it releases whatever it is sucking up and then picks it back up after a few miles of driving. Any chance that you left a shop rag in there? :)

    94 ohv intake gasket

So, you already have a rebuilt engine in your Explorer? That would explain the metal lower intake gasket. How many miles on the truck? How many miles on the engine? Honestly, in my opinion, if it has the metal gasket it should be good to go. The metal ones rarely fail. If you are still going to...

    94 ohv intake gasket

Hi, Brad. I know what you mean about all of your projects turning into more. That seems to be the story of my life. What is your question regarding the lower intake manifold gasket? I had to replace mine due to a coolant leak. First of all, if yours is metal then I'm betting that it's been...

is putting a quart of tranny fluid in my oil recommended by you guys to clean it out?

More like as not, it's the other way around. I know a few people that consider an oil burner to be "self-changing".

    Ratcheting Noise and Clunk: Autohubs?

Wow! Same problem here, on my '94. It is intermittent with no rhyme or reason to it. It could just be my imagination, but it does seem to occur after a succession of turns, such as in a parking lot. Just a loud "ratcheting" sound. If I engage, and then disengage, the 4X4, then it goes away. It...

    Antifreeze leak.

I had the same problem on my '94, and it was exactly as Anime described it. He also gave you some excellent advice about using the Ford gasket. I would also recommend the same. I took out the "broken" stock fiber gasket and replaced it with a Fel-Pro fiber gasket. Guess what? It leaked. Bought...

What are these codes really telling me?

My CEL comes on, on my '94 XL, when the engine is under load. Meaning, at highway speed, or when pulling a hill. I purchased a EEC-IV code reader ('cause Auto Zone won't test vehicles that old) and came up with the following codes; 543 O,C Fuel pump secondary circuit fault 186 C Fault in...

    intake manifold bolts

Exactly. If you're that deep into the engine, just go the extra step and get that fiber gasket out of there. And, seriously, use the Ford gasket. Don't go cheap, not even Felpro. The price isn't that much higher and the quality is substantialy better. Nothing's worse than getting her all...

    trim package

Do you have an overhead console? If so, you have a Limited. 2 door, or 4 door? If it's 2 door, then it's a Sport. Most common, though, is the XLT.

    Windshield washer fluid

-20 blue juice. So long as it doesn't freeze, and it cuts through the road grime, I don't give the washer fluid much thought beyond keeping it full.

Arm rest on front bench seat

To me...it looks like it came out of a Ranger.

New here, with my non running explorer.

130K on a timing chain is not all that bad at all. If it were a timing belt, then absolutely change it. Thing is...IF the timing chain were to fail, a little while down the road, you're going to have to remove the engine again to replace it. If it were me, I'd go ahead and do it while the engine...

    Where is the water going????

While that's certainly possible, I'd say that it's highly unlikely. She said she was going through a gallon a week. If that much coolant is going into the passenger compartment, you're gonna know it. It could be evaporating off of the hot engine before it ever hits the ground. But, again, a...

    Where is the water going????

If you're losing coolant, it's going in either one of two places. Internal...or external. If it's external, you should see some evidence of it. Either on the ground, or on the engine. If you're losing a gallon a week, you should see some on the ground. If it's internal, you're either burning...

    Aviator Steering Wheel

The only thing keeping anything from fitting anywhere is the lack of the proper sized hammer.

    Michelin LTX M/S max psi?

They are a very good "general purpose" tire. They don't beat you to death, with a rough ride, yet are aggresive enough to tear into the snow. I don't do any off roading, so I really couldn't vouch for them on the trail. But on the street...they definately get my seal of approval.

    Michelin LTX M/S max psi?

If it states, right on the tire, max 35 psi. Then that's it. I'm running Michelin LTX M/S, and I keep mine at 35.

    Whining comming from motor

There's a diagram, just to the left of your hood latch, that shows the routing of your serpantine belt. It will show you exactly where your idler pulley is.

Best repair manual for my 94 limited?

Both books are very good. Autozone.com has a pretty decent repair section, with some excellent photographs. Frankly, from what I've seen, you're already at an extremely good resource for repair and maintenance issues. Some of these guys could write and illustrate their own repair manuals.
