A4LD no forward in OD but fine in D

it probably is wishful thinking. it's been 10k miles since rebuild. i don't think it's too much to ask for a few more miles than that before it needs repair again. i have my doubts about the shop that did it. i had replaced the torque converter once and the one i bought was a crazy turqoise...

A4LD no forward in OD but fine in D

when i'm on the interstate and move it to overdrive it drives fine, shifts into fourth like it is supposed to. come to off ramp and left it in overdrive came to stop at end and it drove away fine from a stop while the selector was in overdrive. it is intermittent. perhaps it is not a mechanical...

A4LD no forward in OD but fine in D

i haven't tried it at highway speeds yet and i checked my receipt, it is out of warranty. what a disapointment; i rebuilt the engine around 5k miles ago so i feel like i have to spend the money on this crappy thing now.

A4LD no forward in OD but fine in D

could a bad lockup solenoid cause these symptoms?

A4LD no forward in OD but fine in D

My transmission is allowing me to drive fine if it's in drive but will not if it is in Overdrive. any ideas on what this may be? it only has around 10k miles on it since last rebuild. edit: if i try to drive away from stop with selector in overdrive it just revs, no movement. if i am driving...

    help with steering shaft part

does anyone know if this part has a name? i can only find to replace it if i buy the whole column and would prefer not to have to buy all that. if anyone knows how i can get this part separately that would be great.

    serious mistake on engine rebuild

lately i've been making mistakes. i think i'm getting old and senile. in my mustang i misaligned the oil pump drive shaft with the bottom of the distributor and when i started it no oil pressure. and on this explorer i rebuilt the trans then stood it on end to store it and the reverse band fell...

    serious mistake on engine rebuild

lol. yeah there wasn't a seal in there because i had taken the engine apart to rebuild it. anyhow the new seal is in and i'm super happy with the way the engine runs now. no more steam out the tailpipe :) no more zero oil pressure at idle. i have a lift plate i made for the 4.0 that bolts to the...

it's not leaking much, just a slight dribble.

    serious mistake on engine rebuild

i'm gonna have to take the transmission out. that's not really the hardest job; i just don't want to do it.

    serious mistake on engine rebuild

i'm glad i'm not the only one then. that's why i posted it; i wanted to feel better. next time i'm making a checklist as i go.

    Engine never warms up

i would agree that the coolant temp sender is going bad for the gauge. it's a cheap fix.

    serious mistake on engine rebuild

I'll bet nobody here has screwed up as bad as i did today. i finally put my rebuilt engine in, got her all buttoned up, and started it and was happy. then go into my shop to get a cigarette and right there next to my lighter was the brand new shiny rear main seal. i was going to put it on after...

    Fix it or sell it?

i was in same situation with a 91 that i paid $700 for. i fixed the head gasket and have been running it for over a year now. just an fyi, the donor engine that i bought last month to rebuild for this truck was only $200 and after tearing it down it was in excellent shape; you can get a good...

    Transmission Removal tips?

staking the seal is basically just a way to ensure the seal doesnt work its way back out. the factory stakes it and there is even a tool specific to staking the a4ld front seal. i used a chisel. it does same thing but not as pretty. when you stake it you are bending a small portion of the...

    Need Help with transmission

when you put it into drive and rev the engine does it go into gear then?

    Transmission Removal tips?

you can remove the transmission without removing exhaust; i've done it but it would have been much much easier if i had just taken the exhaust off. the transfer case is an easy removal and it weighs quite a bit so you should remove it. honestly, if you are removing the transmission you might as...

oil pump to block. gasket or rtv?

does anyone else use anything between the oil pump and the block? the factory doesn't put a gasket there and wondered if it would be a good idea for me to put some rtv or make a gasket for it

    manual transmission camshaft

awesome reply! i am so glad that you have first hand experience with this because it was kinda stressin me out. my current engine i am running is a pos. it was driven with water in the oil and with no oil at all for a little bit too. i do not want to use any parts out of it because i am sure...

    manual transmission camshaft

my donor engine had a manual transmission and my truck is an auto. i would prefer to just use the cam from the donor engine since it would be easier. i understand the manual trans cam may have an advanced timing to it. what effect would this have on my auto shifting? the only thing i could think...

93 Ford Explorer Sport-Gas Gauge not working

most likely the sender. factory makes the float out of brass and they develop little pin holes so it fills with gas and sinks to the bottom of the tank.

    Is my A4LD terminal?

the a4ld is a weak transmission but i dont think we ever hear about the ones that DO last. i had mine apart and the entire overdrive planetary was broken and its springs were all broken but it still drove and shifted fine. i took it apart because i felt like it was time and i had the money...
