custom colored ford emblems

ok i got this off of a ford probe site but it should be very similar for the explorers

Here's how it's done.

1) Warm the Emblem with a hairdryer for about 2 minutes. Turn it over and carefully pry around the perimeter with a thin flat object. Now you'll have the front (painted) part (piece 1) and rear seal (piece 2) seperated. Set piece 2 aside where it won't get dirty, the adhesive on it is enough to reseal the finished emblem. CAUTION: if you don't warm the emblem enough before prying, you will crack the clear portion!

2) In order to change the color you must remove the stock color. On the front of piece 1 you'll notice the silver "FORD" is raised on a blue background. When you flip it over the "FORD" is inset and the background is raised. Take fine sandpaper (or a fine emery board) and carefully sand away the background color.

3) Now paint the backside of the emblem any color you want. Touch-up paint or Testors model paints and brush will work fine for this. Allow it to dry thoroughly.

4) Put the 2 pieces back together. And admire your work. If you broke off the mounting tabs removing your emblem, 3M auto adhesive tape works great.

You can also sand the front of the emblem with 400grit sandpaper and clearcoat it, if it has any minor imperfections.

I did this with mine, made them black. Love how it looks. I believe Paraphoe made his red to match his truck, too.

Correct! :D

Oh, and just a heads up, be very careful when prying or you'll pull the chrome gel lettering out and then it will look like ****. The one I have on my tailgate doesn't look nearly as good as the one pictured above because of this. Patience is a virtue I sometimes lack.

That Looks Great! Will give it a try.

Put some pics of the ugly one, to see what can happen :D

I didn't take a picture of it. :D

That is the method I used.

Lets make this a sticky.

What size of grid paper you use, can i use spray paint to do this and how can i take the back logo of a 3rd gen.

Thanks

It doesnt work on all emblems.

Some where down the road Ford change how they made their emblems.

Grit, I would use something light 180 or 220

can we get an idea of when they changed it...im having trouble prying the pieces apart on my '95 ford explorer.

the above method will work on a 95.

I think im gonna go to a junkyard and steal some emblems to try this with. i think mine would look schmexy with some black emblems.

Just finished sanding off all of the blue, waiting for the polyeurethane spray on the front to dry before I paint the background white. Or I might go the whole nine yards and pick up a metallic grey.

Edit: Just kidding, I went with a metallic silver...

Also, how should I go about mounting this to my billet grill? The main reason I didn't put the emblem back on when I installed it was because I had no idea how to with just the three pegs in the back.

can someone take and post up some pics of this being done im trying to do it on my 98 and im not quite sure how to remove the emblems from the truck without damaging them.

hmmm....If I would have found this earlier I would have done mine today lol, I was bored all day and was looking for something to do to the X.
