I put the truck into reverse today and the OD light
started flashing, I thought that was strange so I
pulled over shut down the truck and it's been oK since
however my gear indicator on the dash now is out of
position.
I am not sure if these are related or not it's almost
like maybe the linkage slipped or something.
Picture of problem..

Just sit in the passenger seat while you drive and the needle should look just fine!
Just kidding, sorry no answers here but I'm sure one of our local experts will step up.
Have you tried a search? If you haven't it's worth a try.

Good Luck!!!!!!!

on mine, the indicator has to do with the cable that goes to it..
when I was installed my indiglo gauges, I had a hell of a time getting it aligned correctly, and part of the reason was the fact that the clip that holds the cable into the indicator had came out, and was a pain to get back in correctly.
Not sure if that's the prob you're having, but it's the only one I can think of?

Actually it was the wife that first noticed it from
the passenger side so I'm afraid that that solution
won't work for me.

Sounds like yours had something to do within
the dash. I'm thinking mine slipped down by
the linkage on the transmission, but I'm simply
speculating.
Also has anyone encountered the flashing OD
light which I described?

Just tried that but didn't work, that's sure a fine
cable that they use for the gear cable don't you
think?

Turning it back and forth doesn't adjust anything
on my 97, I've posted a picture to make sure it's
the right think you're reffering to.

There is a black cable with a little wheel on it next to the steering column, under the panel where your knees are.

I just referred to the Haynes manual and it says
I should have it in drive and then put about 2 lbs
downward pressure on the stalk and then adjust.

Do you think because I tried to adjust while it was
in park that's why it may not have worked? Also
any opinions on what may have caused it to go
out of alignment?

Thanks

I didn't use a weight when I adjusted mine. Mine was caused by me pulling the cluster out to change the bulbs.

On the drivers side of the trans you'll find the linkage that's connected to the column lever. Check that to see that it's not bent or not on securely. Also check all the wiring harness & plugs while you're down there.

How's the fluid level? Did you do any repairs or wheeling before this happend?

I had the flashing o/d before too. i disconnected the battery when welding something on it and accidently erased the codes before I could read them.

Do you know anyone around you with a obd code reader?

Thanks Harry, I just talked to a transmission guy
and that part is the right thing to adjust, and the
reason for the cable being so thin is simply because
it's only used for the indicator.

Harry is that white part one piece or two, if it's one
piece I believe that's my problem as mine is two ?

Yes, that's the part.

Nothing out of the ordinary as far as banging the
truck around, I haven't had a chance to scan the
code but my tranny guy seems to think it may just
be a failsafe mode.

I was thinking that too. When I had the OD flashing and was coasting to a stop, the tranny clunked pretty hard. From what I understand, that's part of the failsafe. After resetting the computer it went away.

Have you done a reset?

But even if it was in failsafe, I can visualize it affecting the gear indicator. Odd.

I think it's a 2. I think the white part is a clip. I forget.

Just dropped 45$ Cdn for the whole friggin
assembly, of course they wouldn't just carry
the part that breaks.

The plastic is a one piece assembly.

yeah its one piece. mine cracked and became a 2 piece and lost alignment. it would line up until i realized it was cracked. its just taped together under there now and has been fine for many months.

Yea, I was thinking of taping it or gluing it. I'm
not really into disassembling the dash for a third
time however so I'll see if I can glue it and I'll have
a spare..

Thanks All..
