Transmission filter change on a 4x4

I am planning on dropping the tranny pan and replacing the filter on my 99 Limited 4.0LSOHC 4x4. I was wondering if there is anything I need to know special about accessing the pan that is much different from 2wd version. I saw in one thread it was suggested to disconnect the drive shaft. The...

    Which transmission pan and filter

Hello all, This is my first post on here. I have a 98 Explorer XLT, 4.0, OHV vin X, 4x2. I am fairly confident that I have the 5r55e transmission. The pan is rectangular (does not have the slanted sides the the 4r70w seems to have). I have the transmission code D. It has 18 bolts on the pan...

Do I need to change transmission fluid/filter?

I've got a 2006 Mountaineer, 4.0 AWD with the 5R55S tranny in it. It has 146k on it, and have owned the vehicle for almost two years, since 117k. The transmission shifts good and has no slips. I have no idea the previous maintenance done on the vehicle before I bought it, only what I've done...

All gears forward! Don't forget the manual drive lever post!

I was having problems with the shifting in the 1998 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer. It was revving up and not shifting and then I would have to lower the RPMs to 1500 RPMs and it would shift. Dropped the transmission pan and the filter, dropped the valve body and found I had a blown gasket. Replaced...

Removal of exhaust shield for 5r55e transmission service

I am preparing for a diy servicing on my transmission. The first three were done by shops. I can only floor jack this and of course will be laying down doing the work:( I am needing to ask, how is the exhaust shield bolted or secured on to the trans housing and is it required to be removed or...

2002, 4.0l, XLT, 4 door, 4x4. Where Is The Rear Transmission Filter Located??

Title says it all really. I know how to to a filter and fluid change on these 'sealed' units, but I have done a lot of searching and not yet managed to figure out where the rear 'basket' filter goes on these transmissions. Any suggestions, or diagrams showing where this filter goes...

Replace steel tranny cooler line w/ reinforced hose?

I have a 2000 XLT w/ 4.0 OHV and the 5R55E tranny. To make it easier for a project I have in mind (adding an external fluid filter) I was considering replacing the stock steel tranny coolant line from the rad to the tranny with a reinforced tranny coolant hose. Would this be a bad idea for any...

    Why are there four o-rings?

I'm going to do a pan drop and filter change for my 5R55E. The new filter kit contains four o-rings. But there are only two places on the filter to hold o-rings (see figure). Where should the extra two o-rings go? Just don't want to get confused when it's a mess under the truck. Thanks!
