On a friends '00 XLS with an SOHC engine the metal tube prior to the thermostat housing is corroded and has a (for now) small leak. Does anybody have a part # for this, or is replacing with a rubber hose to the radiator an acceptable fix?

I think I found your part, Motorcraft RH61:

This?

According to Fordparts.com this is a
"Radiator Water Outlet Hose"

If I had to replace one of these I think I'd pull it from the junkyard for low $$.

They probably made this section out of steel for strength at that elbow-bend, and it has a built-in motor standoff. But, it is rubber on either side of this piece, so a full length rubber replacement should be possible.

I would try running it extra long to keep the curves smooth... The trick will be in the curves and keeping them from kinking (it would make a great place for a new leak to start) and a way to keep it off the motor - zip ties or fabricate a standoff?
