'00 sport, ? about PATS and 5-spd.

I've read about everything I found with searching, don't see anything relevant to MY situation...I've only ever had one key for this exp. and after I came back to work on my lunch break on Mon., it decided to disappear from our universe to further spite me...I looked EVERYWHERE, it is gone, it's not going to show up. I allready promised myself I wouldn't put another dime into this thing, no WAY I'm paying several hundred for a key. I'll sell the damn thing as it sits for 800 just to NOT give "them" the satisfaction of my financial raping. From searching, I've learned I can take out a door lock(I allready broke into the POS just to make SURE the key wasn't in there) and go and have a blank "regular" key cut for dollars...I understand this won't start without the chip, but it would turn on acc. and unlock steering, correct? Well what exactly does the PATS disable? IF it's only the starter; since I have (apparently incredibly rare in my area) a 5-spd trans., couldn't I just turn key forward and catch it in gear? Or does it(pats) disable other things, too? Just trying to see if I have any options besides you know what.

Well, seems like I don't even have the you know what option...What kind of keys do I need to get if I were to reprogram? Everywhere I ask and everywhere I look, there is NO listing for a 2000 sport. That's what I have, though. Built 08/99. So does it fall into the '98-2001 explorer category, or the 2001 explorer sport category...WTF?
 






PATS/PCM disables fuel injectors

On my 2000 Sport when the PCM does not recognize a PATS compatible key the PCM disables the fuel injectors. I have a non-PATS key that fits the door lock. It enable the ignition and the starter motor.

Any PATS capable locksmith should be able to cut a key to fit a removed lock cylinder and then program the PCM to recognize the new key. It'll take about 15 minutes for the first key to be "learned" and less time for the second. When you have two keys a third can be programmed by the user after it is cut. Anyone that buys a PATS capable vehicle should offer $150 less if there is only one key for the vehicle. Anyone that only has two PATS keys should buy and third and program it themselves to avoid the cost if one of the keys is lost.

There are probably 50 posts on this forum regarding ways to defeat PATS. I think the only successful way is with a custom tune.
 






Thanks for the info. I knew I wouldn't get off that easy. I did find ONE guy out of all the locksmiths and dealers I've talked to...He says I must remove the ignition lock cylinder AND a door lock for him to cut a key. He says one part of the key works door locks, and another the ignition. But he can't wipe out old codes and reprogram. He said I'd have to put it back together and then get the vehicle to Ford, then they can wipe out old codes and reprogram. But last time I talked to them(Ford) they wouldn't even touch it because it's >10years old.
Also; after searching, I can't find any directions for removing my iginition cylinder lock WITHOUT a key to turn it to run...

A PATS qualified locksmith should have the machine that connects to the OBD-II port that allows the PCM to "learn" a new PATS key. Find a PATS knowledgeable and qualified locksmith. Locksmiths have to be careful that they don't assist a thief in stealing a vehicle. That may be why yours wants you to bring in both lock cylinders. If the locksmith comes to your vehicle or you take the vehicle to him he should be able to accomplish everything needed. I have a key with no chip that will activate the starter and lock/unlock the doors.

That's correct. Otherwise, the vehicle would be easily stolen.
 






Easiest way to do it is to probably find the same year ranger, pull the ecm, pats module, and keys and swap it all over. Johny's in Altoona probably has what you need. I can't remember if they have anything that new with a manual or not.

I think I'm stopping by Sunday so I'll take a look around.

So it's not true that parts of the key operate the door locks and different parts of the key operate the ignition? True or false? If false, then he is asking me to do something I can't do and doesn't even need done(also bringing him the ignition cylinder) just to not help me?

I don't know the answer to that question. However, I doubt that Ford would build and sell a vehicle that can't be used once the keys are lost.
 






I know this thread is old, but I just thought I'd add a little knowledge to it. It IS true that there are two sctions of the key, one is cut to operate the door tumblers and the other is cut to operate the ignition tumblers. There is a chip in the PATS key blank that "talks to" a little reciever mounted next to the ignition lock cylinder that tells the system that the correct key is in the ignition.
