The 22-pin GEM socket is completely undocumented in the 2001 Sport wiring manual. Do you even have a harness connector there now??

1995~2000 Rangers and Explorers had a similar 4-plug GEM and, on those, the 22-pin GEM connector primarily served the electronic 4WD systems. The 2001 Explorer Sport and Trac have a standalone 4x4 Control Module instead.

i have the harness now but it doesnt match up to the wiring in the truck. truck was stolen and that plug was cut out and taken with the radio. i have a new plug but they dont match up with wire colors

Things to watch out for:

For 2001 MODEL YEAR, there were early and late versions of the Sport and Sport Trac. The early style GEM has the three harness connectors and the later GEM (completely different) has two 20-pin connectors instead. The build date cutoff for the change was around 7/24/00 - check your door sticker for the build date.

2001 4-door Explorers are wired differently and use a different GEM compared to the 2-door Sport.

As mentioned above, 2000 MY Explorers had the 4WD controls integrated in the GEM, 2001 MY Sports have the controls in a separate 4X4 Control Module.

so you are saying that even though it has the plug on the gem it doesnt mean i was using it? i dont know for sure if there was anything plugged into it but the other 3 were there still.

That's what the factory schematic shows.

well i got everything in the truck to work but it wont roll over yet so hopefully after getting the keys programed ill have it start. i hope.

Interesting.

There is small one on 4WD models, the TOD module, mounted to the left of the air bag.

The 2001 Sport and Sport Trac had many changes so take it with a grain of salt etc. The keyless entry module is somewhere in the dash etc.

Do you have the original PCM and PATS modules, those are for the keys?

it has the pcm and pats mods but the keys were stolen when the truck was, i had 2 keys cut for it but the dealer has not been able to program them

Ah, you are working with the dealer and the special diagnostic tool. I had that done for my 99 when I needed three keys added, and only had one OEM key. They have to erase the existing key codes before adding any new codes. It's a ten minute process when it works. Mine failed the first time, and worked the next.
