Hi, Folks,
New to this site so hello to everyone.
I have a 02 mountaineer v6 2wd, enjoyed the truck quite a lot till tranny went out on our way back from florida last week. Did some search, looks like tranny problem is common in 02~03 explorer/mountaineer, but not in 04~05s. Per car-part.com, 02~05 v6 2wd have the same tranny code but car-part.com doesn't say 04-05s are compatible with 02-03s. So my question is, is it possible to put tranny from a 04-05 into my truck? If not what are the differences?
OK, after reading posts in this forum, it seems I have a bunch of choices:
1) go with dealer: right now it was quoted 3600 for a new transmission with 3 year warranty.
2) aamco, 2200 with 3 year warranty
3) replace with a used transmission from car-parts/junk yard. $1000 for parts and free labor (my self)
4) rebuild by myself ($150~$500).
Since I run on a tight budget, I am very interested in rebuilding it by myself. So far the biggest job I have done is to swap engine on my wife's town&country. Is this kind of experience adequate for rebuilding transmission?
I am still digging this forum, but if someone could direct me to appropriate posts, I will greatly appreciate.
David
