It's been pretty cold here for the last week (highs in the single digits). Two times this week I've driven to work and the X is fine (I have remote start and let it warm up in the morning). About 9 hours later after I come out of work I jump in it and let it warm up for a minute or two and then take off. I get to the second or third stop lights (about 5 blocks worth of driving) and have to wait through a long red light, and when the light turns green I step on the gas and the engine rpm's come up but the X just sits there like it's in nuetral, and then after a second it seems to drop into gear and go. The funny thing is, is that it was in drive the whole time. The two days that this happended to me, it only happended once after sitting at a stop light for a while, and then didn't do it again for the rest of the trip home. The X is an '02 with only 22,000 miles on it. I'm wondering if there is really a problem, or if it being so cold and not being warmed up yet may have caused this. Anybody else experiance this?

This is certainly not normal, and not caused by cold weather. You have some sort of a tranny problem, and if it was under warranty I'd take it back asap. It will only get worse, and become more frequent, and eventually need a full rebuild.

Yeah, I took it in last week, and they still have it. The dealership can get it to reproduce the problem when cold, but they haven't figured out why it's doing it. My job is testing transmissions, but they are trannys on mining equipment, not little automotive transmissions. I don't know a lot about car and truck trannys (except for a quick week long class where we tore them apart and put them back together). I couldn't even tell you what my X has for a transmission (beyond it being an AOD). Can anyone tell me what combination of bands and clutch pistons are engaged in 1st gear? Also, can anyone tell me what transmission is most likely in my X (4R44E, ect.)?
