02 XLT 4x4 question

Hi i am new to this site and had a question regarding the four wheel drive

I'am curious to know when I am on a dry/wet road and i floor it

it almost sounds like the 4 x4 is engaging and disengaging back and fourth almost making it sound like the engine has a constant miss (which it does not)

the sound (in words) goes thud pause approx 1 sex thud and so on but it is definatly the 4x4
(maybe even a sound like anti lock brakes only more consistant)
it almost seems like the auto 4x4 is extremely sensitive

when i acutally engage it into 4x4 high or low its fine so i have no idea im new to the vehicle

any help would be appreciated

2wd is actually 4wd auto, its activated when it detects wheel slippage. thats probably what your feeling

but even on a dry road i can feel it/hear it almost coming in and out of the 4 wheel

is that normal?
