04 XLT V6 Rear Strut Removal

I am having difficulty removing the rear struts in my 04 Explorer XLT V6. I understand there are 3 nuts that need to be removed on the top of the strut/shock tower but one is hidden from view. It seems to be behind a bump stop that is metal but is covered with thin rubber. I have tried various styles of wrenches (flex head and standard wrench/socket as well as combination wrenches) to reach the nut.

Unless you cut the bump stops, a 13mm flex head ratcheting wrench sounds like the best tool. Penetrant is your friend.

Some have allegedly removed the stop. I cut mine with a mini hacksaw. If you could turn the nut just ever so slightly, you could pull the bump stop off.
Now, tell me this, look where the bump stop is located and tell me why it's there.

I picked up some from a wrecking yard, off an 02 and they are completely different.
