I have had my 05 Explorer for 6 months, I have had to use the 4 high a few times already this season (slushy snow) and twice have noticed after switching into 4 high I am unable to accelerate. After a few seconds it finally goes, is this normal? Am I doing something wrong when switching into 4 high? The car was used so have no manual and I'm not sure if I have to be at a full stop, in neutral, etc. Also I have noticed a grinding/winding noise when 4 auto kicks in, is this normal as well?

Welcome to the site! I would have to say the noise your hearing is not good. Normally you would want to stop the car or go at > 5MPH to engage the 4WD. Doing it on the fly, from what I've always been told, is never good for the T-case or diffs.
