I have a 2000 Moutaineer w/150k miles. Since about 40k miles the 1-2 shift has been bad. In order to get it to shift you must let off the gas slightly. Occasionally the OD OFF light would flash, but that hasn't happened in 50K miles. If you manually select gears, it complies. The local tranny shop rebuilt the valve body with no improvement. THere has been no change in the symptoms since they started.
When I took it back (several places to get second opinion) I was told that the tranny needed rebuilt. Here's how that conversation went:
Me: Total rebuild, how much?
Them: $2000
Me: And if I wait until it goes mushroom cloud?
Them: $2000
So I've been a bad boy and not changed the fluid for the last 110k since I was always sort of expecting to part with $2000 at any moment. I now have a garage and another daily driver so I'm thinking about trying to fix it. I have searched this forum (over several years in fact) and either I'm searching for the wrong things or this is a rare occurence.
Question is should I bother at this point or continue waiting for the big bang?
