I am looking at new 18" tires for my 97 Mountaineer. The general consensus seems to be 255/55 is the best size since it is almost exactly the same width and circumference as the stock tires. However I am interested in the 285/50 size which is within the 5% parameter. The circumference is about the same but is wider. Will this tire fit with no mods or problems?

Thanks,

Don

depends on the offset of the rims you'll be using. if its the cobra r's, then you will prob have rubbing issues, if its a different rim with a lower offset, then you might be ok.

Thanks for the reply. I have Centerline chrome forged Archer series wheels. (18"x8"). Not sure of the offset but were specified for 97 Explorer/Mountaineer.

they may rub on the front sway bar at full lock turning. no way of knowing really until you get them on.

well with 18x8 they will get somewhat taller than wider if you go to 285/50. oh and there is a big difference of width with a 255/55 than a stock tire. My difference was about 2 inches wider
