Ugh. It appears to be tranny related. To be honest, I'm not much of a machanic so to somebody else here, it may be something different.

The Explorer is dead as far as the tranny appears. It will not go into reverse, overdrive, drive 1 at all... however, it will go into drive 2 and go forward. Making it sound to be to be something around the transmission. There is a grinding nose coming from mid front (around the Torque) when it tries to shift but will not engage any of the mentioned gears above.

My uncle who drove it in gear 2, said he could shift it while in movement down into 1st, and it would engage (but only in movement). I'm not sure how far he test drove it, but his shop was a few blocks away from my parents where it broke down last Xmas (2004.. thought we might have bent the linkage due to driving in 22" of snow here in Kentucky). The roads were clear for the hour drive down to Marion, Ky and it drove down there just fine. It wasn't until leaving that the problem occured. We loaded into it to leave, dropped it down into reverse with 4x4 engaged due to trying to get out of the snow where we had to park. The explorer died after moving ver little backwards. I started it up, and that's where we noticed it wouldn't move.

Any advise? My uncle called today and said he was ready to drop the tranny and check the Torque and see about rebuilding the Trans, but I figured I'd check around to see if anybody else had a possible solution or theory before I purchased the whole trans unit and new transfer case.

TIA!

---Edit---

One more thing that be useful here.. they weren't able to pull it backwards at all. Even with it in Neutral. They had to drop the driveshaft to free the rear wheels and then managed to move it.
