ok i have done a lot of searching but saw nothing for my exact problem.

but i have a feeling it might be the shift motor??

anyway the tranny was just rebuilt. when road testing the transfer case keeps popping into neutral could it be the motor?? any other ideas??

Not sure if the motor would do that or not. Wonder if the chain is worn out? Are you sure it's the transfer case poping in Neutral?

thats what the tranny shop said but i dont know myself for sure

went and picked up the truck from the shop cause i dont trust them as far as i can throw them anyways all the lights are on for 4 high 4 low and is locked in 4x4
didnt pop into neutral for me like they said so any ideas guys.

I dunno. The only thing I can think of is to check the wire connections to the T-case to make sure they did it right. Hopefully 410Fortune will chime in. He's good.

update

ok buttons on dash now working but truck will only move in 4lo no 2hi 0r 4 hi ?????
desperatly confused!!!!!!!!!!

Sounds like the first shift motor isn't working. There's two motors that shift between 2hi and 4hi. The other controls 4hi to 4lo. That's the downfall of the push button 1354 is it doesn't give you an option of N. My first X was a push button. I never had a problem with the shift motors but have heard many others have that issue. Hoping 410 will chime in soon. I sent him a PM.

Yes I agree. Check the big sqaure wiring plug that goes into the T case.

Also check the wiring harness going into the tranny

Make sure everything is snug and clean.

First we need to do a diagnostics to see what symptoms you are having.

you said the truck is in 2wd (no 4x4 no 4x4L lights) and it wont move?

You put it in 4wd h and it still wont move?

Put it in 4lo and it drives?

I would suspect the shift motor is out of adjustment or needs to be cleaned.
The transmission shop should not have messed with the T case to rebuild your tranny, but if they did, its possible they jacked it up.

First check the fluid in the tranny and T case. The T case should be full of ATF.

Next unbolt the shift motor, You will then see the little 3 position switch on the T case that the motor turns, you can now manually turn it rom 2wd, to 4wd, to 4lo.

tie the motor up with some zip ties and drive around in 2wd, make sure everything works.

Stop and get under there, shift it into 4hi and repeat.

teh 4lo and repeat.

Does everyhting work? Does it still pop into N?

If everything works now rebuild your shift motor.

You can do a search for this, also look here:
therangerstation.com
Look under t cases

hope that helps.

Also the more info you give us the more we can help.
Start by listing the year/model (I assume it is your 93 xlt)
auto or stick, miles, etc etc....
then the EXACT problem that you are having with the touch drive system

Also the touch drive 4x4 system has a control box that has a self diagnostic proceedure, you can search for this to. It has a red LED light on it which can confirm the signal to the T case shift motore and also tothe dash mounted buttons

update

first off thanks a bunch !!!!! i will pull the shift motor off tonight and try out your suggestions .

just to add -yes its a 1993 xlt exploder with od.a4ld tranny. shifter on the coloum two buttons on dash for 4hi and 4 lo

shift on the fly for 4 hi ! 4lo vehicle needs to be stopped
and put into neutral to shift into 4lo.i can hear the motor working when i push the 4 high button and 4 lo.i have no 2hi or 4 hi just 4 lo.this makes me think maybe it might be a shift fork????dunno never had a t case apart befor.also the red light on the gem is on when i start the truck then goes out after a while no matter what position the t case is in 4x4 or 2hi.there is a white tab on the gem if i press it the light goes on.

i hate to butt in, but i have a related problem. I have a 93' Eddie with 71,000 miles. It has manual locking hubs, and it has the 4X4 and a 4 low buttens. But i will press the small white butten on the 4X4 brain "in the jack conpartment", but the led does not light up at all.
anyoe please!!!!!

Sorry, go to the link in the 2nd post

update

pulled the shift motor last night turned shaft by hand to 2 hi still no go in 2 hi or 4 hi shaft was very loose feeling.
when turning between 2 hi and 4 hi could turn by fingers
had to use pliers to turn into 4 lo and back to 2 hi. could hear a clunk when you put into 4 lo but no sound when
moving it to 2 hi or 4 lo.
