The valve body is likely about worn out at 642k miles. Trans experts will also suggest changing the VB at very high mileage. Most of the labor to have a trans rebuilt is the R&R of the trans, not the bench time. Rebuilding one is not for the first timers, the A4LD is not a strong trans.

Look at the list of parts I posted that need to be replaced for any build, that's the major cost besides the R&R labor. You will spend similar money for any trans you have rebuilt. It's best to begin with the lowest mileage unit you can find, that applies to all vehicles of any age. I wouldn't bolt in any trans that has 10+ years of age on it, it's worth it to rebuild it since it's out.

I suggest finding someone you can trust to build one, bench build if you did the R&R labor, but the internal build should be done by an experienced builder.
