I recently changed the transmission on my 1994 Exploder 4X4 (A4LD).

I did the KOEO and KOER tests and the only code I got was 176 i.e. Left O2 Sensor Lean. There also appears to be a transient code 543 for PCM but only appears when I get a false start i.e. has to attempt start twice.
I note that only because I don't know if it is related to the problem I am having.

Problem:

When cold, the vehicle builds adequate RPM however, the tranny does not respond equally. It kind of lags.

After the vehicle is warm you feel a transition and the tranmission responds normally.

While driving from that point on, everything operates normally.

After I shut down and park for 20 or more minutes, the same situation arises.

My thoughts:

Since I don't know enough about the transmission, I am thinking, and it has been suggested, that it may be the vacuum modulator or the governor.

I was referred to this site and it was recommended that I search on Modulator and Governor which I have done.

Normally I wouldn't hesitate to do either however, some of the horror stories about losing the pin, no pin installed, not being able to get another pin for the modulator etc, worry me.

Regarding governor I am lost. I know where it is and recognize that the transfer case etc. need to be pulled.

It would be nice also if someone has a picture showing the modulator and the pin and the same applies to the governor. With all the knowledge I have seen so far on the forum, they probably are already posted but I have been unable to find them. Maybe you can just point me in the right direction.

Questions:

1. If the vacuum modulator is bad I already know that it will cause the problem however, other than finding fluid in the line is there any other troubleshooting method? Also, when looking for fluid in line should it be done prior to starting or after warm. I am not sure what the modulator does and have not had any smoke from fluid being sucked into manifold. I pulled the line at the manifold and there is no apparent fluid inside however, have not looked at the lower end yet.

2. If it is the governor, will the tranny need to be drained first. Also, what will I be looking for. The tranny was recently rebuilt before I got it. After reading a few articles, and forums, I don't want to teardown until I fully understand what to look.

I have a couple of other questions regarding fuel filter removal and alignment but will post them after the tranny issue is clarified.

Thanks in advance

Looked at #45 and seems easy enough.

It looks like I only need to remove the transfer case/driveshafts.

Since it is a 4X4, I should be able to access the governor without removing the extension housing, is this correct.

Also, Is cleaning and replacement of springs all that needs to be done?

Sometimes the stalk of the governor gets worn down, and the whole thing needs to be replaced. You could reach into the housing to get to it, although removing the housing will give you more room to work. WWW.Wittrans.Com sells a new governor if you need one. Sonnax makes a 35 MM weight to help prevent binding.

Transmission Parts

I went to the site you identified.

Do you know if the Part Number 680 under the A4LD for the Governor includes all the sub parts -1 through -6 or do I need to order individually. It looks like the -3 is the spring.

I will try to look up the 35MM you suggested since I don't know if the one shown for the entire governor is correct.

Once I have all my information I will start the process.

Governor

The various part numbers under 680 still have me confused. Based on your response, I need:

This item

U56680A Governor, A4LD (Small Land On Valve Is .385"OD) (Valve Has 1 Groove) $12.42

OR

U56680AA Governor, A4LD (Small Land On Valve Is .385"OD) (Valve Has 2 Grooves) $12.42

OR

U56680AB Governor, A4LD (Small Land On Valve Is .385"OD) (Valve Has 3 Grooves) $12.42

OR

U56680C Governor, A4LD (Small Land On Valve Is .314"OD) (Valve Has 1 Groove) $12.21

OR

U56680CA Governor, A4LD (Small Land On Valve Is .314"OD) (Valve Has No Groove) $12.21

AND

S56681-4B Governor Weight, A4LD (35mm OD) $8.13

Am I correct. I also need to get the governor out to verify which?

Governor

Ok, got it. As I understand it, I don't have to drain the tranny, correct?

Also, when removing the modulator, what is the risk of losing fluid or should it be drained.

Last Question:

The 4X4 driveshaft from the transfer case to the front differential.

I noticed on a couple of other Explorers that the shaft coupling from the transfer case are parallel i.e. front -- back --. On the others, the couplings are front -- and the back l 90 Degree off. Which is correct?

Thanks for great advice. I worked on Helicopters for over 20 years and never hesitated to fix them since I knew them well. You obviously know transmission with the same confidence. Now at 65 I am a little slower.

Thanks

You shouldn't have to drain the transmission since this area is closer to the top. The modulator is a little lower than the governor, so you will get a little fluid coming out. It's not a lot, but it's something. You could drain some fluid out to make things a little less messy. Clean the bore of the modulator with a wire brush. Hold a magnet near the modulator as you remove it to help prevent the pin from falling out. Apply petroleum jelly (Vaseline) onto the pin when you insert it into the modulator to keep it from falling out. As for the shaft, I would need a picture to compare the two ways of what you are describing.
