1994 Ford Explorer XLT with A4LD transmission problems.

I have 94 Ford Explorer that I just put a used tranmisssion into. Got everything going on it and drives great however it the tranmsission wont engage in park and there is a slight ticking noise coming from the transmission. I am hoping it is just something like the shift cable needs adjustment or something simple. Another weird thing that I not sure how to fix when the ignition is turned on I can move the shifter out of park without pressing on the brake pedal, however when the ignition is turned off it will stay in park and not move but the park is still not engaged.

Welcome to this forum! I've moved your thread into the transmission section. Check the Z link in the transmission as well as the shift cable.

is there something that i need to look for in the z link? I have the transmission pan down and i don't see anything that is abnormal.

Check to see if it's bent or if the hole in the manual valve is rounded like an egg shape.

Thanks for all your help. Turns out the salvage yard I had got the transmission from put the park pawl was installed backwards.. I figured that out and now have park again. However another issure came up. Now when in drive it wont come out of first gear. I can manually put it into second gear but when I put it in drive it pops back into first.

Thanks for the update! Does this sticking gear issue only happen when it's cold? Did you check the governor, and the modulator?

most likely a sticking governor. get ready to take off the tail housing again.
