1994 Ford Explorer XLT
My 1994 Ford Explorer Xlt 4x4 very intermittently dies at idling at the service windows, stop lights, and when I back up and come to a stop and put back into 1st gear. Then the Check Engine light comes on sporadically as I drive on. By the time I get to my mechanic, no lights and she is running. This has been going on for 4 months. I love this Ford and going for my antique tags in 3 more years at 30 years . Other that she is in perfect condition. Only 121,000 miles.

Have you checked the codes?

Have you checked the codes?
My mechanic said there were none. I have gotten too old to get in the engine.

Not tryin to be a smartass here but I would try another mechanic. Are you able to use a multimeter?

I wouldn't start throwing money at it by randomly changing sensors.
My OBD1 scanner was around $30 and THAT was money well spent.

Been thinking about that. He has been the mechanic for all its life. But getting tired of him not being able to fix things. I will not take it to the Ford dealership because of past problems. This Ford belongs to the little ole lady who right now only drives it once a week to the store.

My 96 Escort have the same problem, it turned out to be a vacuum issue, there was a loose hose. FWIW

I want to thank all of you who post your problems and those who respond with help. I was having idling problems at stops, check engine light intermittently coming on and off, and then overheating. My mechanic just could not find the answer until I showed him a print-out of the many suggestions you gave to me and others on their same frustrations. Well, my check engine light was a loose wire from when the air filter was changed, radiator was a new gasket on the cap, and the engine stopping at lights and slow driving was the air intake or something that you guys talked about. So if you think your information goes unread or used......it was. All my problems were fixed in a few ours after months of taking it back. I also changed mechanics and told my other old one 'I told you so.'

I cannot do work physically on my 1994 'Fordy' one owner anymore......and love this group. My Ford is going into the shop soon for new cloth header and paint job. Will keep reading all this great information the site puts out. Thanks again to the site managers and all those who do not give up on us old Ford owners.
